R to M adapter 14642 with Apo-Telyt-R 400/2.8 & Apo-Telyt-R 800/5.6

The adapter is coded, so keep it at auto.

It will bring up a (limited) R lenses menu. Your lenses will not be in it, but that does not matter.

There are few reasons to switch to manual, only if your lens is uncoded but has a screw in the wrong place so that it could be falsely identified. Or if you want to get an uncoded lens into EXIF, etc.

I knew the R to M adapter is coded. But when I go to the Menu-lens detection,I can only choose OFF or MANUAL.However,in the MANUAL section, the 2 lenses are not included,so what shall I do???

That is correct. With the coded R-M adapter you get a choice of  OFF or MANUAL. (AUTOMATIC is greyed out because the camera cannot select an R lens automatically; it would be available were a coded M lens to be mounted.)  As you say the two very long lenses you have are not on the R list. I would set it either to OFF or to MANUAL with 280/4 selected. The latter choice would then write incorrect lens information to the EXIF file, but, unless you have this lens, it would at least serve as a marker remnder for you. I suspect that with  very long lenses, not much other in-camera correction would be taking place anyway. Perhaps you could try out OFF as well, just in case there is any noticeable difference and you prefer it.

John is right, one can select a lens if so desired. However, I personally wouldd just leave the camera at automatic and carry on photographing instead of worrying. There are absolutely no corrections for these lenses. The only thing you'll miss is the lens identification in EXIF which does not exist anyway. I suppose you can tell which images were made with an 800 mm lens nevertheless ;)

Not entirely... the purpose of lens selection is also to influence the auto ISO algorithm for slowest shutter speed (depending on your choice of 1/f, 1/2xf.... for minimum shutter speed). If you go full manual then it doesn't matter.

I doubt whether one would use Auto ISO with those lenses that way ,manual works better; shutterspeed (fast, at least 1/1000th) and aperture are given and Auto ISO will give correct output.

It depends. For primes it works for me since I am used to aperture priority mode most of the times. In that case camera knowing focal length of the lens helps.

Where it doesn't work is in R (or any) zoom lens. The camera picks up lower focal length for calculating minimal shitterspeed which is certainly a problem for the longer side.

We want pics!!!

Oh I think "worthless" really is putting it a little too strongly. The thread has set out pretty clearly those factors which the OP needs to take into consideration when choosing between the available alternatives.

I think you might be taking my little light humor a bit seriously... So all I can say  is  sorry.gif and I consider myself suitable   bottom.gif

After hours of trawling on the web,    coder.gif this was the only smiley I could find that expressed my desire to see some photographs taken with these wonderful lenses. I am sure you would agree with me on that and you too would like to see some photographs taken with these lenses?

So on that note, Chris, when you get the lenses and camera setup, could you post some photographs, please? aul_fella.gif

(So if anyone is of a sensitive disposition the following smiley, as are all the others, is only in jest)

Chris, until we get pics I will be   bawling.gif
