Leica SL + Elmarit-R 24mm f/2.8
ISO 200 @ f/8 @ 1/30 sec

The 24mm focal length on 24x24 format is approximately the same diagonal AoV as a Planar 80mm f/2.8 on 6x6 format.

Leica SL + Elmarit-R 19mm f/2.8 v1
ISO 400 @ f/2.8 @ 1/160

I thought this was an interesting enough capture, technically, to give folks access to the full rez for examination/inspection because of both the very broad dynamic range in the scene and because of the detailing at the focus plane (on the tree trunk) at f/2.8. First is the full 4000x4000 rendered:

Then, for additional comparison, the 6000x4000 original capture, with no processing other than to roll it out from DNG to JPEG:

enjoy!

This image was taken with the 24-90 zoom. As you can see, it doesn't do too badly for smallish objects. As long as the subject is more than about 0.5m away, it should behave well. For closeup shots like this, autofocus, OIS and auto ISO are very helpful.

Here's another one from the same hike. Also hand held. Cute little mushrooms on a moss covered log.

The SL and the lens' OIS make shots like this a lot easier and quicker to get right. I hope Leica comes out with an autofocus macro lens for the SL so I can photograph even smaller subjects.

A cost effective solution for closer focus and higher magnification would be to consider using a  77mm diameter Marumi 200 (5 diopter strength) achromatic supplementary close-up lens (approx £75 in UK) attached to the SL 24-90mm lens via a 77mm to 82mm stepping ring ((less than £5 in UK from SRB) . Achromatic c/u lenses are well corrected and enable surprisingly good results … not to be confused with the cheap as chips single element c/u lenses.

I've yet to see any SL 24-90mm plus achromatic c/u lens images - but the lens' c/u potential with same should be well worth exploring.

Purists wishing to use a Leica solution might consider adding the E-69 D Elpro if you can source one and can also source a 69mm to 82mm adaptor … but the narrower diameter 69mm Elpro might vignette the image.

Dunk ...... I have the +3 and the +5 Marumis on the 24-90 and they give super results...... below about 28mm they show the step down filter in the corners, but if you want macro you are probably not going to use less than 50 anyway .... this is the only image I have due to the stunning weather we have and the fact that everythings dead in the garden and it's a sea of mud ....... hand held 90mm f7 1/80th iso 500 .... with a 100% crop
