When the Noctilux 0.95 came out, I remember lots of images being posted wide open, and they all made me seasick.  I posted at the time that I was NOT suffering from Noctilust.  I also had the 50 Summilux (on a whim - Ken Hansen offered it to me, and for some reason I bought it; never regretted it), and that is such a wonderful lens.

Then someone posted an image where the entire subject was actually in focus, and the background was complementary, and I was smitten.  You can follow the Overgaard approach of only shooting wide open (why else have those fast lenses), or the Karbe approach of selecting your aperture for the depth of field you want.  This is particularly important, in my view, with the Noctilux, 75 Summilux and 90 Summicron.  Where the Noct shines for me, is when the background gives that lovely, almost wonderland out of focus treatment that complements the subject.  It's also why I didn't buy the cheaper f/1 version - that really did make me feel seasick.

Cheers

John

Oh yes.

My favoured M lenses for the SL are:

  • Zeiss 2.8/15 Distagon (red edge, so I'm going to use this in 1:1 format - it's very good on the Monochrom as you don't need to focus)
  • 21 Summillux
  • 28 Summilulx
  • Noctilux
  • 75 Summilux

They're all on the large side for M cameras (except perhaps the 28 Summillux), and they really do work incredibly well on the SL.  On the M, that means I tend to use the 28 Summilux, 35 Summilux, 50 Summilux and 90 Summicron.  A couple of years ago, I stitched together 30 odd images of Wanaka, taken with the 90 Summicron and M Edition 60 - the resulting image is fantastic, but about 3GB.  Difficult to print ...

I've just made an offer for a 90mm APO f2 (I think thats what it is) and that will be my kit complete................I'm done with buying camera gear now, I just want to go out and enjoy what I have got now :)

I just started adding lens information on my blog, sadly I don't have exif to show aperture.

http://www.valentino-photography.com/people-add-boudha-kathmandu/

Sadly I have to post in the same resolution in my blog as here in the forum, or my wordpress would not be able to handle it, as well as they page would be to slow.

I've enjoyed your photographs.  This in particular show a human side to Dubai beyond the artificial and brittle modernity one usually gets to see.
