Update on Freezing Issues?

Has anyone heard any recent news about a fix for freezing issues? I've tried everything: removing battery, trying different cards, formatting cards on the camera and using special software. Firmware up to date. Nothing seems to help. I just take pictures in a very simple way, no EVF, etc. Yet after a dozen or so shots, the camera freezes completely. Nothing works to fix it except leaving it alone until it decides to take a picture again, then sometimes I get only one picture before it freezes again. Very frustrating. I was in Paris the last week and was forced to use my X2 backup -- not a very satisfactory solution. I dropped by the Paris Leica shop and they were completely flummoxed by it.

The answer that might seem obvious is to send the camera in to be fixed, but from reading prior forum entries, it seems to me that Leica has mixed results in fixing this.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Tom

Welcome to the forum.  I agree with all of the posters that this is not normal and you need to send the camera in to Leica service or return it if it is new.  I don't believe any of us have heard of a "fix for the freezing issues" that you are describing.

While I've certainly heard of the issue, I've never experienced it myself.

How long have you had the camera?

How much has it been used?

New or used?

Was the issue always present or is it recent?

Is it getting progressively worse?

What SD card are you using?

Based on my own trouble shooting experience, I find that I have a tendency to skip some potential steps because I am predisposed to believe they are not useful.  I occasionally see for myself that this is not a good idea and find I have overlooked something simple, so I try to avoid skipping steps.

Your post seems to indicate you have tried everything that comes to mind other than:

1)  a different battery, which I personally feel is a worthwhile operation.

2)  a complete reset and attempting to reinstall the firmware, even though it is up to date.

Other than that I think you are looking at a hardware problem and it has to go back to Leica.  Since it doesn't seem at all operational in it's current condition I guess the lost use while at Leica isn't much of an issue in this case.

A normal M240 freezes only rarely if at all. Nothing like this. It sounds like a faulty camera.

+1

I got my mint used M240 in June and was bracing my self for the worst. Even with hammering on it to the tune of 400-600 photos per day on paid shoots it has been faultless, very thankful for this. I think I have had three lockups since June in making some 12,000 photos.

It's most likely a hardware issue in my limited opinion.

I have come to the conclusion that I am best to send it in.

I have tried a new battery, different sd cards, and the sd formatter utility, none of which had lasting impact. I also reinstalled the latest firmware, even though I was up to date.

How does one do a 'hard reset'?

Thanks!

My M240 freezes occsionally, but it might have something to do with the sd cards I use. Some cards freeze less than others.

If the problem is really not solved instantly by pulling out the battery, Leica will have ( and will do ) fix it. If the issue is fixed. You will get a full 2 years warranty on the initial repair. If the same will ocur within 2 years time and the camera has to be fixed again. Leica Wetzlar will do this under warranty.

This is will probably be the same in Canada and the United States according to Leica Wetzlar.

A replacement of the camera will only be done if the camera is beyond repair.

Welcome to the forum.

... If the problem is really not solved instantly by pulling out the battery ....

If the problem is not already present on the card, chances are very good that yanking the battery out while the camera is trying to write to the card will produce or increase the problem.

Thanks never thought of it and the first time in years that I read this. Maybe all my cards are conflicted, except for the ones where it did not occur? or did my camera developpe a conflict. It has been checked lately by Leica in rangfinder issues. Do you thinkt they check the computer functions also, because on the invoice always stands. Checks meets factory standards ( in German ) .

Try SDFormatter. I format each card once with this software, taking pains to do a "slow" formatting job which has a look at every single storage block, before it is admitted to any of my cameras. I repeat the slow and thorough formatting whenever there is the chance that I or a camera or a computer damaged a block. This occurs most often by removing either the card or the power from a device while it is supposed to write to the card.

Buy some new SD cards that meet camera specs.  Do not buy faster or larger capacity ones.   Format them in your camera.   NEVER erase an image.  It fragments files just like a computer without the capacity to correct.  Plus it fills the directory or table of contents and it tells you card is full when it is not.

Download and put back in camera, then reformat.

Stay away from cheap cards as they do not always meet spec and can give trouble.  They put their name on the majors rejects.

Use Lexar or Sandisk from B&H.   No E Bay specials.

If you can afford a leica,  you can afford good cards.   Every new camera I buy gets new cards.

You have to send the camera to Leica for repair.  I got this twice and sent the camera in twice.  Yes, I had to used an A7S on a trip to China too.

Every bad.
