Questions About The Leica SL? Please Tell!

Could be handy for M + R users in that one adapter could stay permanently on the body instead of removing it... Just a guess though.

A Leica T (SL) to Leica R lens adaptor is available for order at Novoflex.

Not knowing much about EVF, how well does it perform with studio flash modelling lights?

(The live view on the rear screen of my canon DSLR is connected into the shutter speed and the aperture and cannot see anything in modelling lights when set to 180th sec and f 16.at ISO 100)

If there is "a true picture preview " in the Leica SL's viewfinder would  this function need to be switched off for studio flash modelling lights? And can it be switched off?

The SL viewfinder can be set to "normal" view, "aperture simulation" view, and "full exposure simulation" view. Normal view maintains the brightest, clearest viewfinder for focusing and framing, and is likely what you'll want for work with strobes.

i have a practical adapter question to add to the rest:

i have 4 R lenses (only one with ROM) and 1-2 M lenses (only one with 6-bit code).   what is my practical solution to adapters on the SL?

  • M to L and R to L (dumb Novoflex adapter) for €350 and €119 = €469
  • M to L and R to M for €350 and €330 = €680

it goes without saying that waiting until 2016 for the L to R direct adapter, and recommending using double adapters until that time are both less than elegant solutions from my favorite camera company  :(

Ramarren has answered this - the stacked adapters give you access to the R lens menu

If you use the Noveflex adapter it will only bring up the list of M lenses (this is because there are many uncoded M lenses - you have some yourself) - a bit of a non-starter

I've mapped the Lens Profiles to the bottom right button - works great.

Best

At the store, I find myself liking the basic design quite a lot and most of the controls seem pretty handy as is, but there are a few things that I'd like to see available in the control customizations that aren't (or don't seem to be) available at present:

- AutoISO in M mode (I was unable to ascertain whether this feature was supported; it is on the X typ 113 and is very useful)

HI There

You can already do this - I've been using it a lot.

Excellent - especially with M and R lenses where you can choose 1x or 2x focal length

A Leica M 240's EVF goes "black" for about 1.5 seconds after taking a shot, greatly

impeding shooting rapidly moving targets, like birds in flight.  I've used a Samsung NX1,

whose EVF affords an (apparently) uninterrupted live view.

The SL's EVF either freezes while capture is going on or blacks out instantaneously ... I didn't notice which when I was experimenting with it, so whichever it is, it is quite fast enough not to be particularly noticeable.

It necessarily has to do one or the other because, to capture a still shot, the sensor, from which the EVF gets its data, has to be cleared and read out. I strongly doubt the camera supports two separate data streams in two different modes simultaneously being accessible from the sensor.

Great! I was hoping it was there. I can't find it in the instruction manual and didn't think to look for it with the demo unit in hand. Thanks!

1. The SL could be a great companion to a Leica S2/S006, but it's at least 8 months delay before the adapter will be available. Isn't it possible to speed things a little bit?

2. Is it possible to micro adjust the AF ? some of my S lenses are not spot on, even after a factory check. It would be great to be able to fine tune the AF for each lens. The focus magnification helps making perfect focus but there is situations where it's just not possible to take the time to check focus.

3. Iso setting and Exposition compensation are often used functions. I suppose it is possible to custom set the rear buttons to have a direct access to those settings (just like on the S006). But on the S system you only can custom the long press on those rear buttons to access the custom settings. It is annoying and slows down the process.

It would be very helpful to be able to custom those buttons on long or short press (ex.: short press = custom function / long press = menu).

1. You can already use the L to M and M to R adapters successfully (pick R lens from list and exif and Auto ISO functions are supported)

2. No need - the S has a mirror, so you need to calibrate the lenses to match between sensor and mirror - with the SL you're reading off the sensor, so it doesn't matter whether the lenses are calibrated or not.

3. I've set it - but as you say it needs a long press - good question :)

I think the question was about the S Adapter SL, not the R Adapter SL.

Yes indeed, I'm an S user with 4 S lenses. I would like to buy the SL and use it instead of my S body when light conditions are degrading. Today it means investing  in the SL + adapters + some R lenses and then wait for the S adapter. Not good.

Thanks Jono for your feedback. Of course no AF fine tuning needed on mirrorless cams, stupid me

Would be great if Leica realizes the need for a short press iso and exposure comp. option (on the SL and on the S systems).

Great work guys  :)

Question: Do you plan allowing focus magnification to be activated by the joystick?

1) .....and/or allow magnification to be mapped to a different button other than bottom left?

Already done Wilson i believe. Buttons 1, 11 & 12 as far as i know.

Sadly not - at least not in the latest firmware I have

Sad indeed. Makes me loose any interest in this otherwise tempting camera. Thanks for sharing anyway.

I suggest you try the camera, LCT, before you discount it.

...... also this is the one feature that has come up on the 'want' list repeatedly and I am sure Leica are aware of it .... I would be surprised if this is not changed at some stage fairly soon ..... just the facility to swap peaking and magnification between BL and BR would be enough

A couple questions for Leica:

1) Why no option for lossless compressed DNG? (Apparently also the case for the Q) Yet, the SL DNG downloads directly available from the Leica site (of the F1 race) all appear to be compressed, ranging in size between 25-30MB, rather than the 43MB uncompressed-only quoted in the manual.

I would like to see this as an option via a firmware update.

Backgrounder: as someone who frequently uses the M240 for wedding, event, and other high volume work, I often create a couple thousand images per event. While many argue 'storage is cheap' I value having a lossless compressed DNG option to minimize card change frequency (granted the SL's dual slot could reduce this if one isn't mirroring) and to maximize storage efficiency of my image archive and backups. It all adds up in the longterm over 10s and 100s of thousands of images. If I was to replace my DSLR (Canon 1DX) with the SL, yet shoot it similarly to my 1DX, I would immediately double storage space requirements, yet receive a marginal resolution increase. Moving around all that uncompressed data also wastes time.

2) Given the initial lack of native SL lens availability, the ability to adapt M and R lenses, and eventually S lenses, will Leica repeat the example set when establishing the S system by easing transition to it for users of other systems, but doing similar for the SL? In other words, will Leica offer fully functional 3rd party lens adapters, such as for Canon and Nikon lenses?

Given my considerable investment in Canon lenses at this time, it would make adoption of the SL an easier proposition if I could continue working with my Canon lenses currently not duplicated by my M lens kit and not yet replaceable in native SL mount.

How quickly will Leica respond to firmware updates? In evaluating the SL at the store, I find myself liking the basic design quite a lot and most of the controls seem pretty handy as is, but there are a few things that I'd like to see available in the control customizations that aren't (or don't seem to be) available at present:

- Direct EV compensation for A and T modes using the top and rear dials (no additional button press required)

- Ability to swap which dial is used for shutter/aperture control

- Ability to map focus magnification assist and peaking to alternative soft key buttons

The above points also interest me.
