Deliberate1 Posted October 19, 2015 Share #1 Posted October 19, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Like many, I am most curious to see what Leica will announce tomorrow. If it tickles your fancy, where will you be placing your pre-order, safely assuming that one will not be able to walk into a store and walk out with one. In general, do the Leica boutiques get more and faster products? Also curious if any in the US purchase from European retailers. I have seen some offerings from England that are considerably cheaper than in the US. I do not know if any savings might be consumed by taxes or import duties. Thanks. Advertisement Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Hi Deliberate1, Take a look here Where will you buy your new Leica?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
sblitz Posted October 19, 2015 Share #2 Posted October 19, 2015 At certain exchange rates cheaper for dollar buyer to buy in Europe. Reason why Leica has discounted in US. Usually buy in US at Leica Soho. In Europe Leicashop Vienna.
Echo63 Posted October 19, 2015 Share #3 Posted October 19, 2015 I wont be buying a new camera for a long time, but if i were, i would be ordering it from PRA Imaging (praimaging.com.au or http://www.leicaboutique-pra.com.au I have been buying gear there for 15 years, from film and paper when i was at school, a Canon 1D2n, 1Dmk4, various lenses, 3 mac laptops, tripod, flashes and my Leica. They treat me and my family, like we are part of their family.
bocaburger Posted October 19, 2015 Share #4 Posted October 19, 2015 I never pre-order anything. Especially anything made by Leica. I wait until any and all nasty surprises have been discovered and rectified (or not), then for a like-new factory-warrantied demo or pre-owned at far less than a new one cost. As such, I buy from whichever dealer has the lowest price. My 2 M240's came from 2 different dealers. Lenses are a different story. I basically have what I want, but if I went looking it would be for a used one, and again, as long as the dealer is reputable and the price is good. Agreed. My only Leica body purchase was a certified M9 from Miami Leica. Basically new with a solid warranty. My only other Leica body is a 1950's vintage iiif (I think) that i inherited from my dear uncle who got it from his dad, my grandfather. That is the most special Leica on the face of the earth - for me.And for one of my sons, one day.
algrove Posted October 19, 2015 Share #6 Posted October 19, 2015 I don't give out my sources. Just joking.
earleygallery Posted October 19, 2015 Share #7 Posted October 19, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Buy from your most local dealer. Unless you don't care about having a local dealer! If you're an early adopter there's a risk of new to market product glitches, and any savings buying abroad would quickly be eroded by the cost and hassle of returning the camera! ayewing Posted October 19, 2015 Share #8 Posted October 19, 2015 I would prefer to buy from a local dealer but unfortunately there is not one where I live. I do have a favourable experience with with several main Leica dealers who sell new Leicas and deal in second hand Leica equipment so it is possible to defray the considerable cost by part exchange or comission sale of some of my less used stuff. thighslapper Posted October 19, 2015 Share #9 Posted October 19, 2015 Leica appear to be quite faithful to longstanding dealerships who sell steadily ...... irrespective of size .... and tend to spread new products thinly and widely. .... so from past anecdotal experience the best place to buy is a small dealer.... somewhere like Italy who will probably get one or two but may actually have no-one on a waiting list. The bigger main Leica Shops may get more cameras/lenses ...... but tend to have much longer waiting lists proportionately than smaller dealers. Cultivating a longstanding relationship with one reliable source usually pays dividends in the long run .....
ramarren Posted October 19, 2015 Share #10 Posted October 19, 2015 I've been buying Leica gear from Dan Tamarkin, for the most part, since the early 1990s. I buy from a few others too, as well as a couple of local shops. They've all been great. G

sml_photo Posted October 19, 2015 Share #12 Posted October 19, 2015 Popflash, B&H Photo, Adorama. Though I see no reason to pre-order. It's not a race, as far as I'm concerned. I see no urgency.

Mornnb Posted October 20, 2015 Share #15 Posted October 20, 2015 I would go to Digidirect on King Street Sydney. However, I think it will be difficult to improve on the M240 in a significant way.

Maybe, because I always buy at the same dealer, which gives advantages.
likealot Posted October 20, 2015 Share #17 Posted October 20, 2015 I remember the best advice I was given in this forum was to buy from a local brick and mortar shop because if anything went wrong then you can nip in and be looked after faster. And if in UK always pay with Credit card (at least the first £100) so you get sec 75 protection (use the credit card directly and not through an intermediary like Paypal, etc).
