Screen protector suggestion

First of all, I wish to say that this forum is great.

Everyone is civilized and very helpful when help is needed.

I've been reading the threads here for months and I've learned loads of things.

Now it's my turn to give something back.

The M8 is camera to take everywhere one goes. That's what I was looking for when I switched from my Nikon D200 with battery grip, and I haven't been disappointed.

Now one thing I found to be quite well-designed on the Nikon, is the screen protector.

It's simple, but very useful.

Of course, several third-party companies make sticky transparent film, which one must cut to size. I've tried it, and I don't really like these. The glue is too strong. It leaves residue on the screen. They don't really last that long, as they scratch very easily. And, importantly, the view through these screens is blurry. But they do protect somewhat.

My suggestion is in fact to be found in a completely different department of our favourite stores: PDA's.

For those who own one of these little marvels, the wish to protect your precious touch screens is not foreign. Of course, the screen on the M8 is mineral glass, and thus, it's very tough. But I often wear a leather coat with a metal zipper, so I'm always afraid of damaging my screen in the long run.

Some of you may be familiar with a company called Covertec. They make PDA cases and screen protectors. These are the best I've ever used. Every pack contains two of them. They're thick, strong, durable and designed not to alter visibility. Also, they're easy to remove.

I cut one to size and I'm very happy of the result.

They go for about 14,95 € for two.

Give it a try, you won't regret it

Somewhere in another thread I posted links to templates I created for the m8 screen.

I did a search for your template link and it seems to be broken. Any chance that you would provide your template again? I missed it last time.

Probably depending on where you live, I thought it is pretty easy to buy a 2.5 inch screen protector and stick it on the screen by yourself. They have most sizes, 2 inch, 2.5 inch, 3 inch, or even 5 inch for a large PDA (like Dopod U1000).

I use these. They are excellent and come in different sizes. Also a custom M8 size with nicely rounded corners. They cost around $11 for three. They don't leave any residu when removed. No need to fiddle around with knives. The M8 size is exactly right and you don't notice them when they are on your screen.

ScreenPatronus, Screen protector - the difference is amazing.

Hi, some time ago some one here suggested DuraSec. They have tailor made 2 versions for the M8 (HighTec and ClearTec). Just applied it yesterday so I can not say how well it holds but they perfectly fit and no cutting required.

Have a look: DuraSec Leica Screenprotector

I have had the same High Tec on for over 3 months now. As they said (but I did not believe them) it keeps on getting clearer with age. It also self heals little scratches. When I replace it, probably with the same in due course, I will take more care and time in getting everything dust free and preferably static free, as I got a couple of tiny specks of dust underneath the film when applying. When you pull off the backing strip prior to applying, I would guess you generate a static charge.

It does degrade the image noticeably, as it is quite thick.

I recently applied an InvisibleShield screen protector I purchased at B&H Photo: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/457867-REG/Shield_Zone_GDC25_invisibleSHIELD_LCD_Display_Shield.html

So far, it's adhered very well and it's optically much better than other screen protectors I've tried. It's a little smaller than the M8's screen, but covers enough of it to suit me.

I have tried Screen Patronus and DuraSec Clear Tec. The former lasted less than a week (and this was repeated after trying again). The DuraSec lasted a bit longer but still came off pretty easily. I think this happens when I put the camera in my bag (no hard edges and the protector is well lined up, so maybe that's not it). I was thinking of trying the High Tec version as it is supposed to last longer. I am wondering if anyone has experience with this when it comes off -- does it leave any residue?

My Screen Patronous came off while traveling and using a bag extensively. It does not take much for it to snag and start to come off and then you are toast. I bought three initially but cannot find the other ones. It happens. I will try to cut my own this time.

You can order one that's made specifically for the M8. It should cover the enitre screen.

Leica M8 Screen Protector Shield

I'd be curious for experience that others have had with the invisibleSHIELD. The one thing that worries me a bit is what they say on their website:

Q: How do I remove the invisibleSHIELD if I need to?

A: Removing the invisibleSHIELD from your electronic device is easier than it may seem. It is much like peeling off a sticker. You will want to start at one corner and slowly peel back small pieces at a time until the invisibleSHIELD has completely been removed from off of your device.

Sounds like it's not the easiest thing to remove. I guess I want to protect my M8 investment with a screen protector but don't want to do any damage to it by trying.

I yanked one off of one of my old cell phones the other day. It came off just as described without leaving any residue, the screen looked brand new.

If it did, you could easily remove it with a small amount of cigarette lighter fluid on a clean cloth. This is by far the best stuff for removing unwanted residual "sticky" from labels etc, that I have come across and I have never had any problems with it damaging plastic or paint surfaces.

Using a solvent-based solution to clean the camera risks damaging plastic parts. There's a citrus-based product called Goo Gone that's very effective for removing adhesive residue and it won't harm plastic.
