peterv Posted September 23, 2015 Share #1 Posted September 23, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's out and can be downloaded free of charge to IOS and Android devices here: http://s-magazine.photography/ceemes/en/home.html Personally, I find Mr. Gilden's work very interesting and I think he made very good use of the S system. His portraits are lit ruthlessly, and the sharp S lens does the rest, so to speak, but to me through the unflattering shots, I see a kind eye, a photographer who takes notice of human suffering and exposes it in brightest/clearest possible way. Advertisement Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Hi peterv, Take a look here New S Magazine with Bruce Gilden. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
johnloumiles Posted September 23, 2015 Share #2 Posted September 23, 2015 Yeah the first thing I thought about when I saw Gilden + S was that the portraits would be brutally sharp/harsh. He didn't disappoint!

johnloumiles Posted September 24, 2015 Share #4 Posted September 24, 2015 I only briefly went through the magazine this morning but after going through it methodically just now I'm astonished with work he did. The portraits are so surreal, the people almost seem like they couldn't exist in real life. Of course a lot of that has to do with his process and the camera itself. I encourage everyone to check it out, it's portraits like you've never seen before.
erlingmm Posted September 24, 2015 Share #5 Posted September 24, 2015 Agree with the above. It would be interesting to have a bit more technical info - what lens (70mm?), how he uses flash etc., I did not find any of this in the magazine?
johnloumiles Posted September 24, 2015 Share #6 Posted September 24, 2015 He has a very simple process but not many people have the guts to get 3 feet from a stranger and blast a flash in their face. He holds the flash in his hand and moves it around depending on the light and subject. Picture of him shooting at the link below. http://jkaranka.blogspot.com/2007/10/shoot-like-bruce-gilden_14.html?m=
Jon Warwick Posted September 24, 2015 Share #7 Posted September 24, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) i wonder what the actual prints look like? I think i read somewhere that (for one exhibition) they're over 2 metres on the long side?! Has anyone seen these images printed in an exhibition yet and can opine? peterv Posted September 24, 2015 Author Share #8 Posted September 24, 2015 I've seen a few prints from this series at the Berlin photomuseum Augen auf! 100 Jahre Leica Fotografie exhibition. http://www.co-berlin.org/en/eyes-wide-open All I can say is they looked gorgeous at (from memory) 90x135cm. Very, brutally sharp, like in the S Magazine.

johnloumiles Posted September 25, 2015 Share #10 Posted September 25, 2015 Maybe the OP didn't need to put it up twice but at this point the narratives between the two have diverged. As usual the S forum is relaxed and didactic while the higher populated thread is divided on Gildens technique. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/250447-new-s-magazine-with-bruce-gilden/?do=findComment&comment=2893771 Do we really need two threads? peterv Posted September 25, 2015 Author Share #11 Posted September 25, 2015 As the OP, I posted two threads because I supposed S users here would be interested also from a technical POV and because I think Mr. Gilden's work is more than important enough for a broader discussion on a more frequented sub-forum. Please don't merge, mods!
