Leica programmers should all be ashamed of the complete shambles of metadata they have created

But the incorrect EXIF data does affect users - the ImageUniqueId and RawDataUniqueIds are not unique and cause duplicate preview problems in Lightroom and Bridge - we regularly get posts on this forum about it. See  http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/243584-m240-or-memory-card-overwrites-when-it-shouldnt/?p=2797970 for details.

The duplicate preview problems are a permanent nuisance and cost time (I often work on a 13" Macbook Pro which is very weak on graphics). This error was not existent in the M8 and Leica should long have corrected it.

Do you guys really rely on file numbering from the camera ????

That's so 1990s ....

I import files into a folder structure on my hard disk based on date and place and then zap them into lightroom

Based on the amount of cameras I have had, I have loads of duplicate file names, for example, inconsistent sequences, etc. but if one uses a folder structure its all irrelevant

You can even use copy utilities which normalise names if you want, free and easy batch copying like in irfanview ...

In terms of EXiF, the basics are fine, aperture, speed, name of camera (e.g. Fuji Frontier  :)  ). The only thing I would like is my Zeiss 35mm f1.4 ZM not to come up as a Leica 35mm f1.4 FLE but that's solvable if I could be bothered ....

Whatever for? Lightroom does that for you on import. And makes a backup on a regular basis.

Thousands of images and I have never had a problem with it.

Me too... but depends on your way of working... the issue IS THERE and I admit that one can feel it annoying... even if, in software terms, is not a "disruptive issue", in the sense that you risk net LOSS of data (*)  : you have an external application that does not manage correctly data when used in some way... considering that the "external application" (Lightroom) is provided by the seller itself (Leica), bundled with its product, one can expect that it works 99,99% right with the "seller's software" (100%, anyway, doesn't exist in the Software world... :D )

(*) or maybe yes ?  I haven't tried/analyzed if, working in a certain manner, and of course ERASING the card, can be that some DNG can be lost forever.... I doubt...

I don't think you fully understand the problem.

How have you managed to avoid it?
