robert blu Posted September 9, 2015 Share #1 Posted September 9, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) The RF calibration of the M, type 240 has to be done by Leica or could be done by other technicians? In case done not by Leica does it invalidates the warranty? Thanks in advance for answer. robert
Advertisement Posted September 9, 2015 Posted September 9, 2015 Hi robert blu, Take a look here RF calibration. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted September 9, 2015 Share #2 Posted September 9, 2015 It can be done by yourself, if you are handy enough. Another technician can do this easily. Note though, that Leica has the most sophisticated gear. Invalidating warranty is unheard of.
bocaburger Posted September 9, 2015 Share #3 Posted September 9, 2015 I would imagine if the owner or an indie repair guy managed to damage the camera in the process, that it could invalidate the warranty.
jaapv Posted September 9, 2015 Share #4 Posted September 9, 2015 That would take some doing - a repairperson would be liable anyway in that case.
FlashGordonPhotography Posted September 10, 2015 Share #5 Posted September 10, 2015 I happily calibrate my M9. With the 240 I have done infinity and vertical adjustments which are easily done with a 2mm allen key and some patience. The slope adjustment screw seems to have a thread lock solution on it so while in warranty I am letting Leica handle this one. Gordon
robert blu Posted September 10, 2015 Author Share #6 Posted September 10, 2015 Thanks for the answer so far, personally I'm not very good in manual precision operations. Of course the only problem having Leica to do it is the waiting time. robert

Gordon The locking compound should be softened by a minuscule drop of acetone before adjustment and will harden in place again afterwards.
bocaburger Posted September 10, 2015 Share #8 Posted September 10, 2015 That would take some doing - a repairperson would be liable anyway in that case. Just haste and sloppiness. Easy to let the driver slip off the close-focus arm adjustment and puncture the shutter blades, possibly scratch the sensor glass if enough force was being applied to the driver when it slipped. Yes a repairperson would be liable, that doesn't mean it wouldn't be a hassle getting them to agree to pay for Leica to replace a shutter and sensor. Anyway the question was could adjusting the rangefinder void the warranty, and my answer still stands, yes if there were collateral damage.
jdlaing Posted September 10, 2015 Share #9 Posted September 10, 2015 No it does not void the warranty. It only means you have to pay Leica to repair it. Leica has one of the strongest backed warranties on the planet. As far as hassle goes..........well..........it's a hassle even getting an email reply but that is another matter. bocaburger Posted September 10, 2015 Share #10 Posted September 10, 2015 Yes I should clarify, what I meant was any specific damage caused by non-authorized person(s) adjusting the rangefinder would not be covered by warranty, but it wouldn't render the warranty entirely void thereafter. robert blu Posted September 11, 2015 Author Share #11 Posted September 11, 2015 I'll ask the same question to Leica Italia and I'll report their official answer robert
Alan Aurmont Posted September 11, 2015 Share #12 Posted September 11, 2015 Coud someone recommend a good technician in NYC? Thanks.
jaapv Posted September 11, 2015 Share #13 Posted September 11, 2015 Contact Leica NJ. RF adjustment should not take long. Maybe even whilst-you-wait.
jto555 Posted September 11, 2015 Share #14 Posted September 11, 2015 I can not find a good technician in Ireland. There was a guy called Alan McDonald but he seems to have closed up shop. Has anybody found somebody else?
likealot Posted September 12, 2015 Share #15 Posted September 12, 2015 If done by Leica is it an expensive job? Also is there any tutorials on how to do this (perhaps they could even be linked in this forum for future reference)?
robert blu Posted September 12, 2015 Author Share #16 Posted September 12, 2015 If done by Leica is it an expensive job? Also is there any tutorials on how to do this (perhaps they could even be linked in this forum for future reference)? Not sure about the M type 240 but I had my M7 RF calibrated by Leica in Germany and they did it free of charge even if the camera was no more in warranty time. The only problem it took about four weeks. robert
Jeff S Posted September 12, 2015 Share #17 Posted September 12, 2015 Also is there any tutorials on how to do this (perhaps they could even be linked in this forum for future reference)? http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/118043-m9-coincidence-at-infinity/ Read especially from post #8... ...and various other threads. I leave it to Leica, with more sophisticated equipment, and happy that M240 LV provides quick info on whether something is off in the first place. YMMV. robert blu Posted September 19, 2015 Author Share #18 Posted September 19, 2015 Just a quick update: I ask via mail the question to CS in Leica Germany and I received next day an answer: they could not answer the question and suggested me to contact Leica Camera Italia, supplying me the mail address, which I did soon. Mail was signed by Kaufmann Nicolas. So far more than one week later NO ANSWER from Leica Camera Italia. I sent another mail a few minutes ago, let see... robert
robert blu Posted September 22, 2015 Author Share #19 Posted September 22, 2015 in order to give a correct information after I complained with Leica Germany for no answer from Leica Italia I received this time a polite answer where they say RF calibration has to be made in Leica Germany because of the extreme precise tolerance necessary respect the sensor requiring a particular machinery they have not inItaly. It was nice at the end to receive an answer :-) robert
robert blu Posted September 23, 2015 Author Share #20 Posted September 23, 2015 Again to report a correct Infos, Leica Italia answered my mail. Turnaround for RF adjustment Gramany is 3-4 weeks, they are ready to supply a substitute camera meantime in case of need. Of course I was invited for a field test of the M240 , this is dangerous robert
