Hey! You're describing an M4!

Just had an extraordinary stroke of luck - which is others' misfortune - and now i'm not sure what to do about it. Advice needed on the following situation:

Probably Stockholm's leading professional camera store suddenly went bankrupt at the beginning of the week. I walked by on my way to work this morning and popped-in to take a look at their lenses, but they only had a couple of 90s (which i already have), so i was almost relieved to leave only taking with me a few packs of film at 30% reduction... when one of the other guys walks past holding a box in his hand, and says: 'Oh - if you're interested in Leica i just found this wrapped, brand-new M7 in the stockroom - you can have it for...' and then names a price that was simply waaay too good to refuse.

My problem is that i've actually been looking for another (chrome) M6TTL, and not a brand new, never-used M7 of which i'm now the proud owner.

What to do? Will i get used to the luxury of this purchase - or will the hankering for a nice old worn M6 never quite leave me? And would i be better off selling it straight away - at a profit that could be used for an M6 and that used 21 2,8 that i've also been looking for...?

Not really a selling kinda guy is the problem - hate the messiness of it... Hmmm - luxury problems.

Any advice/congratulations gratefully received.

Similar experience, went to pick up film, nothing else. the guy at the counter said, You just gotta see this and showed me a way too beautiful M7 ala carte LNIB at a very very fair price. Concerning the luxury aspect I am living with it quite fine.

As an owner of an M7, I've noted that it's less loved than some other cameras in the range, notably the MP that I also possess and an M6 that I sold on long ago. I've put this down to it's automated features in a community where mechanical instruments take precedence.

What I can tell you from experience is that the M7 is an awesome user camera. It's my first choice when shooting hard and covers errors that occasionally happen when under pressure.

Of particular benefit are:

the DX coding reader that prepares the camera for the next 36 frames. Stick a wild 100 iso film in a 400 iso shooting session and the consequences are small.

the fabulously accurate auto exposure. Forget to rotate the aperture ring and exposures are still perfect.

extended auto exposure for night shots.

I adore my black paint MP, but on a recent trip to see Azzo I got tired of carrying two bodies and couldn't leave the M7 at the hotel. The MP stayed in the safe. A remarkably consistent set of negs were produced.

Everyone seems to love this camera so much, i'm beginning to be convinced. :)

Genuinely sorry if anyone's been offended by any of my idle musing - I'm sure it would've annoyed the hell outta me if i read this sort of BS from some other lucky soul who was sitting and wringing his (or her) hands over the terrible fate of being sold a brand new M7 for a great knock-down price. Pathetic really.

It's probably all mixed-up with other anxieties about having a too-privileged life - so i'll just shut up, enjoy my good fortune, unwrap the damn camera and use it!

Just as it was intended.

Thanks for not banning me instantly from the forum for being a total idiot.

Bro, keep the M7 and get a MP next time (drop by the store again, maybe they got a brand new set in the back too???). You'll be pretty complete. As for me, I use my Leica R4s SLR body with Summilux R lens for AE shots and use my MP for manual. I feel pretty complete but I'm tempted to go digital with either a used M8.2 or sell a car for a M9??? Haha!!!

Then of course, there's always the romantism of older Leica like M2 or M3. I owned a M2 for a short while and would still get it someday as a collection. I'm just not used to not having a meter.

I was wondering what you finally did as I read the thread. Looking at my own post up there (#13), over two years ago I was high on my two M7 bodies. Now both they and the M6TTL are sold, although I still think that the M7 is an excellent camera. :) I replaced them with 0.72x and 0.85x MP bodies so I'm back to mechanical bodies, but who knows? ;)

All the same, in a way it feels sad that the M7 isn't going to someone who really wanted and longed for it - and i feel bad that it came to me instead, just because i happened to be there at the right time.

Plasticman, You'll get over that. It's called shopping. It's how it works. Fill the M7 with the film of your choice and enjoy.

Well don't know why this thread resurfaced, but I sold the M7 and now I'm looking for a mint chrome M6TTL.

Round and round it goes... :)

...I'm so glad you had the cojones to follow your heart, plasticman. All that collective rationalising on behalf of something you really did not want in the first place(!) was beginning to get to me. Hope you find what you are looking for and continue to live by your rules - life's too short. :)
