35mm summarit 2.5 new but reduced price vs second hand 35mm Summicron ASPH?

Just to add even more confusion on my part, have now been researching more deeply and can find a version 2 Cron gor same price as new Summarit and the ZM 35/1.4 and 35/2 really do look very good in terms of IQ, but a bit bigger and funny filter size. Is a pre-ASPH v2 Cron just not worth it? I know worth is v subjective, but in terms of IQ, image rendering? I understand the ASPH will be much sharper through the range of wide apertures and one is paying for the engineering and a newer lens......

Have I just answered my own dilemma? Is the Cron v2 best avoided and its a drag race between the ZM f1.4 and the ASPH Cron? Any personal experience gratefully received with respect to the different Crons and the Zeiss...!

If I were to decide anew on 35mm, I'd probably go for the ZM 1,4/35 and a CV 2,5/35 when compact is called for. The present ASPH has got a unique look Jip alludes to & that I personally appreciate at closer distances. But effective use for me is limited from Æ’2-2.8 or Æ’/8. Others will take issue with the claim but focus shift in between is there and it's a pain.

The ASPH is now beyond its 20th birthday and a redesign must be in the very near future. Probably APO too.

Never got any focus shift with the 35/2 asph so far. I don't shoot brick walls and rulers though. As for OoF rendition, i woud check carefully that of the CV 35/2.5 before ordering it. Otherwise, i find the ZM 35/2.8 my best "slow" 35 ever.

One caveat on the 35C is the high-contrast that may not be to everyone's taste and I wouldn't recommend it to the uninitiated. I've got four 35mm lenses and that is by far the most interesting one.

I'm not sure whether a full APO correction would be needed for a 35 mm lens.

I've been shooting with an M6 and the 35mm Cron ASPH for a few weeks now. The extra stop is certainly worth it for shooting film. It behaves very much like a modern lens, it's so sharp it scared me a bit when I got my film back. Out of focus rendering is good, maybe not as good as the non-asph v.4, but it certainly doesn't draw attention to itself.

Thanks again to all for your experiences. Apologies for intermittent comment as I am away with limited internet at the moment...

Have been considering this quite a lot and still not decided but comes down to:

Summarit- small, mid way between classical and ASPH image appearance, "only" f2.5; Cron ASPH- sharper performance, f2.0, more expensive, second hand; Zeiss 35/2- Cron level IQ, big, funny filter size, cheapest option.

I keep oscillating between them all depending on my mood!

One thing for certain though- this trip with just a 50 has confirmed that I need a 35mm, so I have make a decision soon!

Having thought a lot about this I would like to keep the budget to sub 1k. The ZM is obviously in this range but I have also been offered a part exchange on my 50mm Cron to bring a second hand Cron ASPH into the same price range.

Am I being bonkers considering this and ending up with a single 35mm lens?

Will probably go for the ZM, but interested in thoughts on the above....

Best

Paul

It is a great lens. For a long time it was my only lens. It would still be my only lens, but the existing rebates were too tempting. I use it on digital, but I think everyone agrees that on film it really shines. Enjoy it! I think you made a wise choice. A simple and yet versatile setup that lets you concentrate on taking pictures.
