xiaubauu2009 Posted August 5, 2015 Share #1 Posted August 5, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) As title, is there any difference between compressed and uncompressed DNG from S? if so, what is it and does it influence IQ?
Advertisement Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Hi xiaubauu2009, Take a look here Compressed or Uncompressed... . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
John McMaster Posted August 5, 2015 Share #2 Posted August 5, 2015 It is a lossless compresssion (unlike the M9) so should be no difference...... john
Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted August 5, 2015 Share #3 Posted August 5, 2015 John I originally had mine set to compressed and later switched to uncompressed as I read somewhere that the colors were better with the uncompressed files than the compressed but I can't see any difference and the uncompressed files are massive so I have switched back to compressed

xiaubauu2009 Posted August 6, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted August 6, 2015 Compressed so, there's no difference between them? I haven't tried the un-compressed version. I am just wondering if there's a quantifiable difference between the 2.
Dougg Posted August 6, 2015 Share #6 Posted August 6, 2015 Lossless means no loss of data in the compression. I have not compared one to the other, but if I believe in lossless compression, compressed would be the way to go... That's how I have it set. jip Posted August 17, 2015 Share #9 Posted August 17, 2015 It is lossless as with the M (Typ 240) there would be no reason to NOT go compressed. Lossless = Lossless.
mjh Posted August 21, 2015 Share #10 Posted August 21, 2015 Unless one’s perversion is such that one prefers larger files over smaller files there is no advantage to uncompressed DNG files.
Willy ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° Posted September 8, 2015 Share #11 Posted September 8, 2015 Love the exchange of strong opinions. Missing the real question though: if lossless equals lossless, and all things being the same, then why avail us the option of DNG and compressed lossless DNG to begin with? John McMaster Posted September 8, 2015 Share #12 Posted September 8, 2015 I think uncompressed would be easier to work on with a less powerful computer, possibly also quicker to write to buffer as less in-camera processing john
jip Posted September 8, 2015 Share #13 Posted September 8, 2015 With the S 006 and 007 the files are LOSSLESS compresses, so there really is NO reason why you would shoot UNCOMPRESSED. Also if they didn't offer the option, people would start ranting as well, like: Why if the compressed is eaqually good as uncompressed don't they give us the option to check this out ourselves. People are never satisfied, ugh. But, quality is the same and it saves you disk space.
Bill W Posted September 8, 2015 Share #14 Posted September 8, 2015 I am just guessing here but when you take a shot, it is an uncompressed DNG file first and foremost. Leica gives you the option to store it compressed if you so choose which I do.
jip Posted September 8, 2015 Share #15 Posted September 8, 2015 Of course it is uncompressed first, then it becomes a .DNG, or a compressed .DNG. But unlike with the S2, it's completely lossless, so there is NO reason to use the uncompressed files.
peterv Posted September 9, 2015 Share #16 Posted September 9, 2015 Are you saying the S2 is not completely lossless? That would be new to me, source? I think you are mistaken.
jip Posted September 9, 2015 Share #17 Posted September 9, 2015 The compressed files on the S2 are lossy as far as I know. So on the S2 you would benefit from shooting uncompressed just like on the M9.
jip Posted September 9, 2015 Share #18 Posted September 9, 2015 From the manuals of the S2 and S 006: S2: Data formats DNG(rawdata),either uncompressed or slightly compressed (by non-linear reduction of color depth) S 006: Data formats DNG (raw data, uncompressed or loss free compression) Meaning on the S2 you will permanently loose colour depth information when using compressed files. On the S 006 the compression is lossless meaning when decompressing by your RAW converter you retain the full and 1 on 1 quality you would have had by shooting DNG uncompressed.
