el.nino Posted July 26, 2015 Share #1 Posted July 26, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I got these strange streaks on my images Especially visible when shooting in portrait format and underexposing a bit. I think development can be ruled out as the streaks are always on the same position (throughout various films) and the films are developed hanging in large tanks (don't know the english word for this). First I thought that the scanner might be the problem, but also here the streaks stay in the same position no matter how I place the negative (90°, upside down etc.). So my only conclusion would be that these are caused be lightleaks, but I can't really be sure how and where the light should get in (Leica MP). Has anybody seen something like this before? thanks, daniel
Advertisement Posted July 26, 2015 Posted July 26, 2015 Hi el.nino, Take a look here Leica MP / Lightleak?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pop Posted July 26, 2015 Share #2 Posted July 26, 2015 If the problem occurs with short exposure times, I'd suggest having a look at the edges of the shutter cloth. Are they uneven or "hairy"?
earleygallery Posted July 26, 2015 Share #3 Posted July 26, 2015 Looks more like a Dev or scanner issue to me. I would try a film from a different camera as the next step.

Are they uneven or "hairy"? thx. didn't see anything. but "cleaned" the edges anyway. put in a new film and did some test-shots against the blue sky with shutter speeds from 1/60 to 1/1000. el.nino Posted July 26, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted July 26, 2015 Looks more like a Dev or scanner issue to me. I would try a film from a different camera as the next step. The scanner can be ruled out because no matter in what direction I "insert" the negative the streaks always stay the same. Might try another scanner some time. Development also can be ruled out because nothing touches the negatives during processing. only one small clip at the start of the film. No rollers or anything else involved. earleygallery Posted July 26, 2015 Share #6 Posted July 26, 2015 In my experience you can't rule anything out until you rule it out!
vanGeist Posted July 27, 2015 Share #7 Posted July 27, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) How do you agitate? Wrong or insufficient agitation can make these stripes. Not enough developer can also result in stripes. You wrote that you underexposed the negative. Underexposing colour film may also cause stripes in the negative. The photo below is underexposed Ektar 100 and there are visible stripes in the image. I don't know exactly how much I underexposed, but it should be something around one stop.

But though it may be possible to get streaks from agitation they wouldn't be in the exact same spot through different films. My issues really seems to come from dirty or uneven shutter curtain "ends". Same as e.g. here: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149660 http://photo.net/leica-rangefinders-forum/00cXmT http://www.rangefinderforum.com/classics/forum/messages/2/24383.html?1336242387
el.nino Posted August 12, 2015 Author Share #10 Posted August 12, 2015 Just FYI: Cautiously cleaning the shutter curtain edges with an air can seems to have helped. My test film doesn't show the "effect" anymore (tested at all shutter speeds).
lincoln_m Posted September 27, 2015 Share #11 Posted September 27, 2015 El Niño, this is as pop says muck on the rubber curtain edges. I had this on an old M6TTL. It is most noticed at fast shutter speeds as the gap is only 2mm at 1/1000th so any muck closes the gap making dark lines in the longer direction. As the shutter curtains overlap it is difficult to clean yourself. Probably a job for Leica? Lincoln
