lloyd.almeida Posted July 9, 2015 Share #1 Â Posted July 9, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Many M8 users have had screens die out on them. I have picked up a used M8 without a working display with the intention of using it as an Film shooting Digital storage Camera. Â Would appreciate any tips fellow shooters have to give in this regard. Â This thread would also serve as a one stop for anyone in a similar situation. Â One important contribution owners with working LCDs could give is key combinations to access functions. Â Â

david strachan Posted July 9, 2015 Share #2  Posted July 9, 2015 HI Lloyd Lenshacker and others have helped to offer settings advice on the M8 if the screen doesn't work. See here.. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/243714-accessing-menu-to-adjust-time-on-broken-lcd-on-m8/  cheers Dave S
lloyd.almeida Posted July 10, 2015 Author Share #3  Posted July 10, 2015 Hi David !!  Thanks so much for the link .. I’ve read a lot on the forums and that post escaped my eye. Very informative and interesting, Lenshacker really laid the Menu button sequence out well. I just wish I knew the Firmware version on my camera so I could just follow the button dance.  I need to turn off Auto ISO and figure a way to change ISO wile shooting ( Not as important as Disabling Auto ISO ) A solution for ISO change while shooting, paste a print of the screen capture of ISO settings on the LCD with the button sequence !!.  I changed the ISO and image format using Leica Capture on a friends Windows machine. ( If anyone needs it Please message me )
lloyd.almeida Posted July 10, 2015 Author Share #4  Posted July 10, 2015 The Button Dance  If we could document the Button Dance for important settings this would make a good reference and finally a well formatted PDF that we could use on the Phone.  Below contributed by Lenshacker ( Thank You so much). david strachan Posted July 11, 2015 Share #5  Posted July 11, 2015 Yes Lloyd, these are correct according to my button pressing , and same firmware as yours (2.024). Previous firmware did not have "Advance" so button presses were one press less with the older firmware ie starts at "Firmware" at one button push up. cheers Dave S
lloyd.almeida Posted July 11, 2015 Author Share #6  Posted July 11, 2015 Dave  Thanks for verifying the dance. These are from Lenshacker. My display is dead :-(. Added his firmware and partial SN so people can have some sort of reference.  Im still documenting the sequences, I haven’t tried the button dance yet. Need to confirm my Firmware version somehow cause the last thing I want is to change some values, not get the intended setting and go deeper down the rabbit hole.  If you have some time can you please list the steps to turn off Auto ISO, that’s one setting I need to change.  Cheers
david strachan Posted July 11, 2015 Share #7  Posted July 11, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) HI Lloyd I'm having trouble with my internet connection so I may not be as responsive as you might hope. Seems the street's phone lines are bad due to very rough weather here and may take a few days to fix. But... 1. turn on 2. Set, brings you to ISO setting screen 3. choices are Auto ISO, 160, 320, 640, 1250, 2500 from top to bottom of screen. 4.  buttons down to choose and press set, touch shutter button to exit the set screen.  If you have Auto already set, then one button down push should get you to 160 ISO, two downs will get you to 320, etc.  You can also tell from the viewfinder info, after setting camera shutter speed to "A",  which ISO you are in, by the shutter speeds (keep aperture constant) shown in the viewfinder. Obviously a slower shutter will mean a slower ISO setting. And vice versa.  Let us know how you get on. I'm guessing you have the camera already set to DNG+JPG?  cheers Dave S
lloyd.almeida Posted July 11, 2015 Author Share #8  Posted July 11, 2015 Hi Dave  No worries take your time. Hope your lines get fixed soon. Rough weather and no access is not a good combination. Thanks for reaching out in-spite of it. Yes I have set the file format to only DNG via the software. The newer Leica Capture version 1.0.5 lets you set ISO as well but i don’t have access to it. The Combination did not work I am still getting funky ISOs. ( Maybe step 4 choose and press Pad Center Button ? )  Cheers.
david strachan Posted July 11, 2015 Share #9  Posted July 11, 2015 Lloyd Should have written ... 1. turn on 2. Set, Set again, brings you to ISO setting screen 3. choices are Auto ISO, 160, 320, 640, 1250, 2500 from top to bottom of screen. 4.  buttons down to choose and press set, touch shutter button to exit the set screen.  If you have Auto already set, then one button down push should get you to 160 ISO, two downs will get you to 320, etc.  Need to press "Set" twice to enter the ISO menu...sorry to mislead. cheers Dave S
lloyd.almeida Posted July 12, 2015 Author Share #10  Posted July 12, 2015 Hey Dave  Woah .. what setting did I change with the earlier instruction  I think we need to get screen-shots with the button combos if possible  Was hoping other members would add to the Button Dance Wiki! Or at least verify .. Anyways  Im a bit confused now  Power ON, SET ( brings up )
david strachan Posted July 12, 2015 Share #11  Posted July 12, 2015 Hi Lloyd I've tried both my M8's and after turning ON, and two pushes of SET button...I get a screen with choices of..  "3. choices are Auto ISO, 160, 320, 640, 1250, 2500 from top to bottom of screen." as per post#9  Perhaps someone else will confirm these settings??  I have tried the erroneous button dance in my post#7...this should change nothing in the Set Menu, as long as you exit by pressing the shutter button to exit the Set menu, as per post. Post#9 is the correct post. I get consistent results with both my M8's doing this method.  Remember you must start the camera, from Off, to follow the sequence. Starting from Off the menus reset to their first screens. If you don't start from Off, the menus will take you to the last setting you configured.  There is no response with centre pad button on the Leica M8; it is strictly a rocker switch. By the way, Firmware version can always be found in Exif data in Lightroom. ISO settings are also shown in the Exif data.  cheers Dave S
rivi1969 Posted July 13, 2015 Share #12 Â Posted July 13, 2015 My M8 screen is 100% functional, no issues here, but just in case, I already set the camera to my prefer parameters and leave the ISO at 160. I just use it the whole week on vacations and never check the screen once. (If the light goes too dark, I switch to my Sony A7).
lloyd.almeida Posted July 13, 2015 Author Share #13  Posted July 13, 2015 Hey Dave  Thanks for the updated sequence and for testing the old sequence.  Im a happy shooter at ISO 160 !!  Really appreciate it, now I can get cracking to understanding the lens and the beast. Was really getting frustrated with the ISO tripping out. With some practice changing the ISO should be quite simple to do as well.  Cheers
Guest Posted July 14, 2015 Share #14  Posted July 14, 2015 you don´t need to change the iso at the cam. you get better results if you allways shoot with iso 160 and boost the sensitivity when you develop the raws files.  btw my screen works perfect ;-)  lambda. dlbr Posted August 11, 2015 Share #15  Posted August 11, 2015 you don´t need to change the iso at the cam. you get better results if you allways shoot with iso 160 and boost the sensitivity when you develop the raws files.  btw my screen works perfect ;-)  lambda.  Yep, that is the way to go. You can use Leica Capture to set the camera (iso 160, store DNG od DNG+JPG), and you are good to go. However, using lens conding is not an option I am afraid.  Speaking of digital pushing, you may want to check DeNoise plugin from Topaz Labs (http://www.topazlabs.com/denoise). It is truly awesome, does much better job than LR itself.  And my screen is also perfect, althoug I keep it off most of the time. Who would do chimping, anyway.
lloyd.almeida Posted August 11, 2015 Author Share #16  Posted August 11, 2015 Dlbr  Thanks for the tip. I use Linux so RAWtherapee and Darktable are my only options ( Both are cross-platform maybe someone can give them a test drive )
