I have a M(246) which is not exactly a backup for my M-P(240) and I also have a Q.   I also have a Nikon D800e for the times I need to go long, a Sony RX100iii that my wife uses, and a Nikon AW1 for underwater.

My justification for the Q was that I wanted it.  :D

My backup camera tends to be a portable compact which serves in an equal but complementary role.

Don't we all have lots of cameras?

My wife uses a DLux 6 so when traveling thats always available.  I've decide to keep my X2 because its not worth that much and it's an Ideal back up  for the M....I can do most things with a 35mm lens.

Back up for my back ups .....Nikon 610 outfit ......but I hate caring that heavy thing.

As a victim of GAS I have several cameras. Leica MM, Canon 5D II, Hassy 503, Nikon V1, Panasonic Lumix, .....and the one I mostly use is..... My iPhone!! The rest are backups.

Oh I didn't know this Ricoh has an M mount available for it.

Yes the GXR which unfortunately has not been updated by Ricoh has an M mount unit which contains a sensor properly designed for use with M rangefinder lenses. It will work well with nearly all the Leica M lenses as well as many other brands with a suitable adapter.

The perfect idea of a backup camera came from the era when you needed as a professional another camera body to carry another alternative prime lens. We all had them, it was a similar body or something very close. So two Nikon F's, or two Leica M2's etc. But since then, long ago it was, cameras have changed immeasurably. And while you do get the odd person who genuinely does need two bodies that are the same, it is now far more productive to choose a backup camera that can cover the basic requirements but then also add whatever the main camera lacks.

So choose something different enough to be useful in it's own right, not something to fester in the camera bag in the vain hope it may one day be used.

Do you have a backup or second camera that you use for quick snapshots or if you don't feel like taking out the expensive gear?

I am considering the Leica T and use an M adapter with my M lenses.

thoughts?

I keep struggling with this.

I have had a NEX-5n, A7r, D800E and a Leica T, all with the purpose of giving me what the M does not - longer reach, video, and a cheaper alternative to my M cameras.

Then I looked at my shelf - M3, M-A, M Edition 60 and Monochrom and came to the conclusion I should just use what I have.  That will last as long as it takes for Leica to offer a cheaper (hopefully more robust) full frame alternative to the M, with the ability to use M lenses, and others beyond 90mm.  As Al has predicted, my resolve will them probably fold and I'll try again.

The end result is that I have a T for sale, with EVF and other bits and bobs, and a drawer full of Novoflex adapters.  If you're interested in this camera, I will happily list it here for sale - it has just come back from Leica (I dropped it) where it has been given a new case and complete overhaul, and the EVF is brand new.  I also have a spare battery for it ...

In the last few months, I have sold most of my so called backup cameras and lenses. Now I am at a stage of getting rid of unused gears. I had two of each of my fav cameras or lenses....sometimes more  :o GAS attack!  No more GAS!!

Understood. To stabilize my estate, I am being dragged, kicking and screaming into selling the huge lot of photography stuff acquired over fifty years.  Call it Anti-Gas!  Imagine yourself in that position and suddenly everything becomes clear.

I enjoy photography far more than I enjoy cameras so my ideal "backup" camera would be a clone of the main one which feels a bit indulgent and redundant. With modern digital cameras you will know within a month if you have a bad one so the very long answer is no, I don't require a backup camera.

My D-LUX 6 is practically always with me - even if I do not intend to take photos. My other choice is a Sony RX 10 - silent, good results if not too dark and easy and quick to change focal length because of the zoom - but larger as the D-LUX 6. And if I had a serious project for earning money  I would take my my 5 D III and the 24/70 and the 11/24 with me - if I do not need a tele lens. But in this case I am not sure, if I would take the M240 with me too.
