Trading in all my Leica M gear for a new Leica S

No different to shooting my DMRs or even film. With stage lighting, it's usually about 1/60th at F4 at ASA 800/1600 or permutations thereof e.g. ASA400 1/60th - 1/125th at F2.8. That has worked for film, my DMRs, the M9 and the S(006). B&W Film and digital has at least +/- 2 stops latitude, so I just concentrate on framing and catching the right moment. Great thing about digital is that you can check on the first frame to make sure that you're in the right ball park.

With practice you can hand hold even a DMR with the huge 180/2 Summicron at 1/30th - 1/60th. When I'm photographing drummers, it's never anything faster than 1/60th - that way you get the sticks blurring, rather than standing still in mid air.

Thank you for the quick reply. I have the S2 and from my tests I was happy up to iso800, maybe 1250 if I converted to B/W. But, yes I agree with you after a bit of practise I was able to shoot as lower speeds with the 70mm, I think the best I ever did was 1/25 of a sec.

Yea I was going to ask the same question...............

I am joining a 16 day photo trip to Ethiopia in January to shoot in the Omo valley and will obviously want to take the Leica S with me but wondering what/if any camera to take with me for a back up for low light situations. I don't know if I would get away with my Profoto lights and a softbox in the back of the 4 x 4 for occasions when we can do some portraiture kind of shots........that would be cool

This is not a direct answer to your question, but one of the things to know is that you can use the S with old manual focus lenses that can give you a bit more speed. For example I bought the Mamiya 80/f1.9 and I really like it. They are not that difficult to focus because you get focus confirmation when you manually focus them (a  dot appears when you are in focus).

Some examples with it :

I think that the Typ 007 should represent quite a step forward in higher ISO performance (amongst other improvements). Noise influence can really be affected by subject, purpose, technique and developing choices though.
Here with S2 and the 70 CS, I've survived max ISO and aperture at barely hand-holdable  speeds (also known as some acceptably sharp!)

I followed a similar path. I use the 006 for portraiture and love it. Form factory, lenses (70 CS & 120 CS), leaf shutter, and the gorgeous files.  It is a simple and compact (for a MF camera) that handles nicely.  The D810 is my back up and it's awesome but simply love the 006.  Could not be happier.   I enjoyed a year with an M240 and a year previous to that with Monochrom.  Those cameras, particularly the MM are what convinced me to take the dive for the S system.  The MM files were stunning and I would not have purchased the S had I not had that experience. I would open MM files and a big smile would come to my face. That happens now with the S, even more so.  The experience and the files it generates give me a lot of pleasure.

Cheers for adding that note..............yesterday was a kind of strange day, I woke up with butterflies in my stomach and just couldn't get it out of my head all the fun times and fantastic pictures I had taken with my Leica M system and why now was I going to give it all up for something I hadn't even held onto.

I kept asking Nuk if I was doing the right thing and after about an hour of "yes babes its up to you, if its going to make you happy why not". etc etc ...................to when I guess I started to get her piss@d off she started saying 123 Blur..........meaning when I used to take her picture with the M a lot of the times the files were just not sharp and it was at that point the butterflies went away, we jumped into the car and popped over to Leica in downtown KL and did the dirty deed.

The first thing that struck me was holly sh}t look at the size of the viewfinder and man my M lenses looked like thimbles compared to the 70mm. Anyway we made the deal and I just can't be happy enough with what I have. The picture below was a 5 minute snap shot of my wife trying on a jacket for our trip to Scotland in September....................Thank you Leica.

Seems like user error…assume you checked RF/lens calibration with LV.  M images should be consistently sharp, if intended so.

But good you found something that works for you

….for now.

Wow! that's a pretty portrait. Glowing and delicate, but with wonderful detail.

Obviously you've found a system worthy of your aspirations!

Very much looking forward to seeing some landscapes posted.

I tried S 006 system in my studio few times and felt that tethering option with Lightroom wasn't as good as my Hasselblad system.

1. Image rendering delay in realtime

2. Too many times camera stopped tethering and I had to remove the battery and reset the process

3. Hard to find used lenses in the market (unless there is no limit on your budget)

4. Hard to sell the lenses since industry standard is based on Hassy and P1 (in medium format space)

Just wanted to share my experience. Again S is a good camera with high quality sets of lenses but it might change or slowdown your workflow. Also the crop is not 4x3 which is medium format signature and also 37 mp might not give you enough cropping option.

I ended up up ordering the new P1 XF IQ350 since I need to use the back on technical cameras as well.

I'm using M246 monochrom and M9 Monochrom for my black and white fashion portraiture and some architecture work!

I tried the tethering to Lightroom 6 last night and it worked fantastic saying that I have nothing to compare it to as I've never done it before but it worked smoothly and no battery removal needed

The great thing about the S is that it gives you MF high quality images in a package, which you can take anywhere in any weather. I use mine handheld in the photographers' pit at concerts. I can't imagine myself using a Phase or Hassy camera in that environment. Same thing for the nature/wildlife photographers going into the desert/rainforest/mountains.

Congrats on the new S. Enjoy shooting with it :)

I shoot fashion portraiture and beauty in the studio for 4 to 8 hours continuously and S couldn't really handle the entire shoot when I test it out for few times, I had issues such as freezing few times and long wait to see the result on the monitor in tethered mode. Also as someone who shoots with 4x3 crop and 50 megapixel back, it was hard to consider S based on its sensor size and pixel density. S is a great agile and compact MF system for landscape and nature photogrpahy but I haven't seen it to be used widely in the fashion, architecture or product photography industry yet and not sure if Leica S was targeted for these markets. Hopefully Leica will catch up to the competition in MF space. I love their lenses :)

Not a good start

The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “NDW09496.DNG” can’t be read or written.

  • 2 weeks later...

What about an additional S body for 4:3 shooters utilizing the same image circle of the existing lenses/camera body lens throat? The diagonal measurement of the current 3:2 sensor would enable a really usable 4:3 sensor and keep more people happy. Never understood why Leica went with the 3:2 small format dimensions in a "medium format" system. Will we see a "Sinar" equivalent in the future?
