Leica Q and the new S 007

Very impressive reviews of the Leica Q. The sensor i s a bit of a mystery, it is CMOS, but is it CMOSIS? It is definitely not the same as the M sensor from CMOSIS. Different colors, and ISO up to 50.000 (!).

The S 007 seems to be delayed. It was supposed to come in Q2 2015, of which less than 3 weeks remain, and there a no rumors. Some say it is expected August/September. At launch at Photokina last fall, I had the impression that the sensor would be 37,5 Mpix CMOS, a larger version (30*45mm) of the current M sensor.

Speculation: Has Leica redesigned the S 007 "behind the curtains"? Could it come with a Q type of sensor with extremely strong ISO performance? Could it even have a higher pixel count closer to 50 Mpix?

Just speculations, but the silence and delay is interesting.

The Q sets a new expectation level for Leica sensors - I think it will be very difficult for Leica if the S007 is perceived as having yesterday's sensor technology.

I am heavily invested in the S system myself, and I love it, but would only upgrade to S007 if it takes the system to a new level. The S 007 seems to be positioned as an "action MF" - high ISO,  2-3 pictures/second, it needs to be up to date sensor-wise. As a studio camera the S 006 is fine as it is.

Landscape also, the S2 sensor yields beautiful images.  The option for greater mp would be welcome, the lenses have been optimized for more resolution and it would be interesting to see how far they could be pushed.

I too thought that Leica might take the opportunity to release the new S at the same time as they announced the Q but I guess the Q as well as the S deserve their own separate announcement.

Or perhaps they feel the new S is not completely ready for market yet. I suppose a camera at this price point, with a very good reputation, made for professionals, is not going to be released unless they're absolutely sure there are no bugs that need to be ironed out in the field. Everything has to work flawlessly from day one. I'm not in a hurry, still love my S2-P. I'd rather Leica take their time, than get something wrong that spoils the reputation of this great system.

We can speculate on the possible reasons, but why there is still no S to date, we really don't know.

That the S 007 was announced for the early summer was good for my purchasing the S 006, because the shop gave me a very good price for it...

What a beautiful piece of equipment! When I began working with it I was even considering selling my M240, because with it and the MM I can address nearly every project... Now I won't do that, the many M lenses I have, and the depreciation of the M240 speak against departing from the M240.

Indeed there were some unexpected delays but the S (Typ 007) should be available soon now. And as originally announced it will feature a Max sensor from CMOSIS.

Why not a 2nd iteration of the CMOSIS ? Keeping the same pixel size and working on other areas of development ? They have had time to work on, from the release of the M240 sensor... anyway, me too am a lot curios abut the question of the sourcer of the Q sensor...and I think that it won't remain mistery for long.

SO much is happening on the sensor side now, see Sony's release of the back-illuminated CMOS sensor at 42 Mpix and high ISO at a decent price, 14 stops DR.

Leica will have to come up with a VERY up to date sensor and perfomance to defend the pricing of the S007.

I think that the S (Typ 007) will be quite a different camera in every respect (including market position and pricing) to anything that Sony is producing or is going to produce. Certainly the newest sensor technology is impressive. However there is a lot more to the system than that. The comparative products in the S segment of the market are from Hasselblad and PhaseOne, not anything 24x36 from anywhere else. I have the M (Typ 240) and some of the best M lenses but it is now virtually unused. The differences are that great (for my studio purposes).
I use the S2 (about 20 000 frames so far) and do think that the feature upgrades that the S (Typ 007) will bring would be very worthwhile. However I couldn't possibly fund the new body though. Not really crippled with my second hand S2 body of course ;-)

Please try the S 006 setup with the 70mm. and decide if you like the experience. Than you might decide to add the 007 to your kit when the camera ( delayed) will be available.

I am planning to keep my S2P as a studio camera and buy the 007 to add to my equipment. I will be selling some rare and exotic M lenses and one of my two Sinar kits to finance the 007.
