wattsy Posted June 15, 2015 Share #21 Posted June 15, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I got the M-E. The grey put me off but I made the compromise for the peace of mind of owning a new camera. Now I wish I'd gone for a late M9p, the colour is quite unattractive. I originally thought the 'grey' colour of the M-E was, at best, odd but after buying it I came to think, with it's smooth lines (lack of a frame selection lever and USB port cover) and silver on grey colour scheme, it is actually quite a handsome camera. I no longer have it (sold all my colour digital Leica bodies last year) but occasionally consider buying one again whenever I see a bargain (recently saw a UK dealer selling the M-E new for £3,200 inc. VAT) for those times when I'd like to use my M lenses digitally (in colour).

jack-tucker Posted June 15, 2015 Share #23 Posted June 15, 2015 I have an M-P (240) and like it, but still I sometimes think about buying another M as a backup. If I had the extra money to do so, I would go for the M-E. I like how it looks. I even like the grey colour and I think the M-E is somehow special. stephen.w Posted June 15, 2015 Share #24 Posted June 15, 2015 I like the colour of my M-E, even though it took me a little while to get used to it. I was surprised, when watching the William Eggleston "Imagine" BBC documentary the other day, to see him shooting with a M7 / M6TTL which has the M-E colour scheme. Welcome, dear visitor! wattsy Posted June 15, 2015 Share #25 Posted June 15, 2015 What's in your camera bag at the moment It depends upon what I'm going to do. After years of persevering with Leica M digitals of various flavours I finally saw the light last year and now I use a Nikon D810 and two AF lenses (35/1.4G and 70-200/F4G) for all straight paid work and find I couldn't be happier. For stuff that doesn't earn a direct crust or is something more 'serious' (to me ) I use either my Monochrom or (increasingly so) my M film bodies and a 35mm M lens. For casual/personal, I just go with a film body and 35 Summicron. If the resale price of the Monochrom wasn't so far down the pan (I recently saw a fine looking example being offered for $4000/£2650 ) I'd be sorely tempted to sell mine and put the money somewhere else. As it stands, it offers greater utility to me if I keep and use it (and it still amazes me when I see the results – just not so much in the tonality/feel department). jim0266 Posted June 15, 2015 Share #26 Posted June 15, 2015 Perceptions are a funny thing. When the M9 first came out I played with one at a camera show. The RF patch flared like my M6 used to before having it upgraded. I came away unimpressed with the camera, coming from decades of using film M's. It seemed loud and I didn't like the feel of the shutter release. Last year at the same show Leica had an M-E on display. I was shocked how much I liked the camera. It felt great, the RF would not flare and the shutter release seemed fine. It's possible the M9 used a different setting where the M-E was set to soft. I had the itch again, so I rented an M-E for a few days and purchased on shortly thereafter. Over the past year I've made more images I like than I had in previous years with my DSLR. At that same show they had the monochrome based on the M9. I could feel that camera vibrate in my hands as the shutter re-cocked. I think Leica bodies can vary from sample to sample more so than a Canon or Nikon. Even film M's seemed to vary more than film Nikons or Canons. Every Nikon F3 or FM felt the same. Every M2 was a unique personality. The screen on the back of the M-E does scratch easily. I had mine for a week of lightly using it seeing if any issues would arise and needing to return it. In that time I did get a tiny mark on the screen. Once I decided to keep it I added a screen protector and haven't worried about it yet.
asiafish Posted June 15, 2015 Share #27 Posted June 15, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I love my M-E and will bring it, a 50mm Summicron and 35mm Summarit to Korea tomorrow, with my X (113) or X Vario as a happy snapper I can pass to family members. Still undecided about stuffing the 90mm Elmarit (ancient) into the luggage somewhere or just leaving it at home.
asiafish Posted June 16, 2015 Share #28 Posted June 16, 2015 I've used M9's and M9P's and also the M-E and I had a gut feeling that the M-E was constructed with a bit more tolerance. Maybe bwcuase it incorporated or the minor internal chamges incorporated into M9 production during its run and also whatever minor changes made in putting all the parts together durong construction of each body. Again I have no proof of amy of this but it was a distinct feeling I immediate got with two M-E bodies. Obviously though equally wonderful image producing cameras. Dave (D&A) I briefly had an older M9 and now own a brand-new M-E and an M Monochrom that I bought new in 2013. That older M9 felt a bit looser, mainly the shutter speed dial and the power/mode switch, but also just something in the feel of the shutter release. I have no doubt that the internals were adjusted slightly as the production run went on, which is normal for most products. My M-E and M Monochrom are tight and feel like the high-quality precision instruments they are.

Prosophos Posted June 17, 2015 Share #30 Posted June 17, 2015 Yes the M9/M-E is "worth getting". Even though I'm enjoying viewing sample images from Leica's newest offering (the Q), the M9 continues to be unique in its colour signature and image rendering. Here are some sample images from the last few weeks:
DandA Posted June 17, 2015 Share #31 Posted June 17, 2015 Its as though Leica listened and realized the color signature of the M240 wasn't ideal or what many prefered as compared to the M9...so they were especially attuned to this with regards to the Q and color output. A definite step in the right direction in my opinion. Dave (D&A)
sblutter Posted June 17, 2015 Share #32 Posted June 17, 2015 I've got both. Use the M9P mostly - sapphire screen cover M-E is the back up. I'd 'P' that one too - but they don't offer that option
otto.f Posted June 17, 2015 Share #33 Posted June 17, 2015 I would have given a big yes a few month ago, after Leica's initial promise to find a definite solutionfor the sensor problem. BUT: since then Leica has introduced two new camera's: MM240 and Q. Apparently they take their time to do this while there is still no solution for their customers owning a CCD-M. So if this would not lower my confidence I would not reinforce their policy in buying any Leica product at this moment.
darylgo Posted June 17, 2015 Share #34 Posted June 17, 2015 Ok guys, next qu. I can get a M9-P in silver and black and a M-E for roughly the same price. The silver M9-P and M-E are perfect and around 6.5k and 1.5k clicks respectively. The black M9-P is slightly cheaper (£100), has 9k clicks and a few very tiny chips. I like the silver M9-P but aware a newer camera in the form of the M-E might be better What do you think ? Hi Colonel, Have you made your decision/purchase? My first answer was Silver M9-P, thinking further I would test each of the three bodies prioritizing the one whose rangefinder is most accurate with my lenses, there might be other differences that make the decision for you. Whenever I can test multiple samples of bodies or lenses I do, normally one will outperform the other(s).
colonel Posted June 17, 2015 Author Share #35 Posted June 17, 2015 I am still thinking. I am still put off a bit by the sensor issue, not because Leica won't fix it, but because of its potential inevitability and a possible 3 month loss of camera. I tend to agree with both arguments on style. I prefer the way the M9-P looks but prefer the security of the M-E as a later model. I just bought an MP and am having such fun I am digitally suspended for the moment. However inevitably I will return
asiafish Posted June 20, 2015 Share #36 Posted June 20, 2015 I got the M-E. The grey put me off but I made the compromise for the peace of mind of owning a new camera. DandA Posted June 20, 2015 Share #37 Posted June 20, 2015 Of course color is subjective. The ME in person looks nothing like it does in person. I found it has an understated elegance and definitely attracts less attention that the flashy ailver which I also owned. With its silver accents it goes very well with both silver and/or black lenses. I wasn't a fan of the original M9 gray but the ME's color is very different as is its finishes durability. hossegor Posted June 23, 2015 Share #38 Posted June 23, 2015 i bought an m9 four weeks ago (again) because i missed it so much. i love shooting with it, and the rendering is one of its kind. its a fantastic camera and i love its limitations. heres some shots i did with it. colonel Posted June 23, 2015 Author Share #39 Posted June 23, 2015 I do like the size, weight and design of the M9 better then the M240. As a file user having selectable ISO up to 1250 is tremendous. As I only use f1.4 or faster lenses even ISO 400 film has never been an issue, even in low light. I wonder whether Leica will find a permanent solution to the filter glass corrosion
