Back focus, Moire and bad bokeh

I've been hearing about how the 35/2.0 - asph summicron is much too aggressively sharp, has nasty bokeh, and compresses the midtones, but I just got one anyway, and sometimes there are subjects which it seems to fit, such as this:

The full-size jpegs are in the pbase gallery, at

new_jerusalem.

All developed more or less the same way in C1, extra shadow, one notch extra contrast and color sat, default sharpening and turn off the damned noise reduction. I'll be happy to hear where the nasty bokeh and Moire can be found, but I know about the dust spots already...

cheers,

scott

Scott, it's a fantastic lens on the M8 I don't recognise _any_ of the characteristics that you mention <grin>

Nice shots, Scott. I have been very happy with mine and have not seen what others call harsh bokeh, or any softness I would attribute to focus shift, although I have not tested rigorously. On the contrary, the lens has impressed me very much. I suppose to see what some mean with harsh bokeh it becomes necessary to look at the results from the older 35 Crons, but I prefer the higher resistance to flare and so on that the new lens gives.

I don't like the 35/2 asph bokeh personally but i hardly see any in your pic Scott.

True, the title of my post was tongue in cheek, since that construction site gallery is almost all taken at f/5.6 and 1/500 or less. The railroad tracks might have some OOF areas. Here's a better example, from lunch today (at f/2.0 or 2.8):

I was surprised by the complete lack of Moire with all those fine wires in the air. Perhaps someone can find it.

Scott,

I think the ugly bokeh and moire talk about the 35 f2.0 asph are just ugly rumors propagated by 35 Summilux owners attempting to justify the substantial extra cost of that lens. ;-)

The 35 f2.0 has been my favorite lens since I got it three years ago -- no complaints here.

Thank you Scott. I don't see doubled lines in your picture but highlights get sharp edges like in the first crop below. 2nd crop is the same with gaussian blur. Shows what a lens like the Summicron 35/2 IV could do IMHO.

My god, you upres an image, get ugly pixel artifacts, and then Gaussian blur it, getting a smooth image back, and declare it a 35/2 IV?????? Please refrain from such nonsense and post a real 35/2 IV shot if you want to make a point. Geez :)

Ouch! peur.gif Just trying to explain what i mean that's all. cool.gif

I'd like to do a comparison with both lenses but i don't own a 35/2 asph for the very reason that i don't like its bokeh, now it is a matter of personal tastes needless to say.

Examples of 35/2 IV bokeh? You will see couples of those on the web as this lens is considered as the 'king of bokeh' for what it's worth.

I've already posted some samples here if i remember well.

This one for instance. I'm not at home here but i'll try to find other ones when i find some time.

Hmm, I could probably get a shot similar to this one with my 35/2A for comparison, but there is the additional confounding factor of the R-D1 vs. the M8. I am not sure if it makes sense to compare like that.

This bokeh thing is not new Carsten. Was/is the same with film. Hard to believe that IR, focus and other issues of the M8 could change anything to this. Anyway if you want to be sure, just donate me your M8 i'll treat it with all due credit and respect you can trust me!

I just acquired a new 35/2 ASPH from a Leica dealer who does not normally sell M lenses. He ordered one in for a guy who never came back for it. I nearly fell over when he told me I could have it for £400!! I snapped his hand off pretty quickly. It looks like the guy just wanted rid of it from his stock room! It's not coded (he ordered it a year ago and it's just been sat there!), but I have fixed that with a sharpie and will send it for official coding some time soon.

Anyway... I have been impressed with how sharp this lens is, and have not yet had any shots 'spoiled' by bokeh. I am normally a 28mm shooter on the M8, but this 35/2 is so nice I am forcing myself to use it ;)
