Alternative hoods for 50mm Summicron?

I had problems with the hood on the 50 Summilux ASPH not staying out.   I use a cheap screw in vented hood from ebay,  works and looks fine and if it gets trashed I'm only out about 10 dollars.  there are several sellers including "heavystar"

I use the Leica Universal Polarizing Filter. It has a sturdy hood and the filter can be rotated out of the way.

I haven't used mine in a long time but I don't recall being able to rotate the filter out of the way without the hood going with it?

Hey guys,

Wondering if anyone has any thoughts regarding alternative vented hoods for a 50mm Summicron.

I dont feel like the built in hood would give as much protection as I would like.

Thanks!

You could swap for the previous (optically identical) version which has the A42 clip on vented hood (and also a focus tab if you're into that).

Personally, I wouldn't screw anything into the filter threads, it would annoy my filters.

Cheers,

Michael

Any ideas where I might find an A42 clip on hood. Can only seem to find find A42P Hoods.

39mm screw-in hoods can be screwed into fiters having internal filter threads like Leica's if need be.

Here wide and standard 39mm Heavystar bought on e**y a couple of years ago.

lct,

Can you guess on the 'limit' of the Heavystar wide shade? 35-28-24?

thanks,

28mm without filter if memory serves but i used it on crop cams essentially so i would not swear it is true on full frame sorry.

Thanks! For its price I suppose finding out wouldn't be too expensive. (Certainly cheaper than stripping off Leica's shade from my 28 Elmarit ASPH, luckily not lost.)

AFAIK, the APO50 hood locks in position, but not the Lux 50 hood.

No I checked with someone who owns one and the Lux ASPH 50 hood does have stops to prevent accidental retraction if you give it a twist.  However there are no detents so it can un-twist and retract, therefore not exactly a positive lock.

Neither 50/2 apo nor 50/1.4 asph have a positive lock, as far as my samples are concerned at least. Both can un-twist and retract by accident.

Yes that's ^ what I meant.  My pre-ASPH 90 Summicron has a telescoping shade which is very stiff (damped) and takes a concerted effort to retract, so such is doable.  Never undertood why the 11826 Cron's shade is so loose.  Then again it extends barely a quarter inch past a filter, so honestly I never had much faith it did anything much to shade the lens, at least not compared to the vented shade on the 11819 and earlier Cron's.

fwiw, I use this on an older 50mm Summicron (Version III 11817): http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/800620-REG/Heliopan_73019H_39_mm_Metal_Lens.html

It's sort of like the Heavystar wide posted above, and it's straight (39mm at both ends and with threads at both ends, too.)  It's pretty short but keeps the lens very small and compact and seems to work fine shading the lens.  The 'official' 12585 is too big for me personally. And you have to flip it around to put a cap on it; all my Leicas have cloth shutters :-) ... and it's also too expensive (imho) on the used market....
