In my third edition (2011) of his Leica Compendium, Erwin writes "Once in a while, all parameters fall into place with that indefinable fit that characterises the presence of a successful creation. The Elmarit-M 24mm f2.8 ASPH is without any doubt a masterpiece of optical engineering and within the Leica ~M range a landmark design."  Hmmm - as I have 21mm and 28mm lenses, 24mm has not (yet) appeared on my radar screen...

I've had this lens for around a month.  I'm still not 100% sold on it but I do think I like it.  It's a good lens for tight quarters.  I've used it on my M246 with an external optical finder, the EVF-2, Live View, or simply guesstimating while focusing with the RF.  The guesstimating has worked surprisingly well.  I got a later copy that was factory coded, so that's nice for tagging and organizing.  I just don't know if this lens is really any better than the Zeiss 25 2.8.

I don't.  I tried applying the profile for the Elmar 24 3.8 but I didn't see much of a difference other than distortion correction, and I don't think the correction was helping.

AFAIK distortion correction is about all LR profiles do - for Leica lenses anyway.

The Elmarit-M 24 ASPH is my favorite lens. I find the Elmar-M 24 ASPH is crisper, more 3D and noticeably better corners, but the rendering of the Elmarit is plainly nicer. In terms of spatial distortion, the Elmarit has a bit, whereas the Elmar has none that I can detect...  so the pixel distorting action of pp designed for the Elmar should, as you say, do almost nothing at all to any file.

The Zeiss Biogon 25mm is a wonderful lens with rendering similar to the Elmarit 24mm. But in my hands, crispness on axis and color saturation of colors with the Elmarit are both superior to the Biogon. I guess if I were only shooting portraits with a ~24mm, the Biogon would be my pick.
