Bill W Posted March 24, 2015 Share #11 Posted March 24, 2015 I have seen a lot of screw in hoods in silver but only black reproductions of the one that comes with the Safari.
Malvolio Posted March 24, 2015 Share #12 Posted March 24, 2015 Are you sure the vignetting was not related to whether the lens recognition was on? What lens were you using? What aperture were you taking pictures at?
Manoleica Posted March 24, 2015 Author Share #13 Posted March 24, 2015 The Lens was the 35 that comes with the Safari Set. Auto lens recognition On.. f2.. Both Leica & B&H agree that a problem exists on my particular Set.. Therefore all parties agreed on a New M-P240 + 35Cron Replacement (sadly no unsold or spare Safari sets available)...So I'm happy at the replacement but sad about not having the Safari Set.. wattsy Posted March 24, 2015 Share #14 Posted March 24, 2015 Popflash sell the #12504 round hood for the 35 Summicron which is similar (arguably superior) to the one that comes with the Safari (albeit in black and at a price). If you are very keen to obtain another Safari I know of at least one UK dealer who has the set in stock.
Nuggie Posted April 16, 2015 Share #15 Posted April 16, 2015 When I first shot with the Safari when I got it, that was what I felt as well. Then I decided to do a comparison with my exisiting M240 and the Safari with my fav 35mm Lux ASPH at f1.4. Surprisingly, the vignetting is very similar on both cameras and not at all different. Then when I switched to the Safari Silver Cron, the vignetting was indeed harsher at f2.0. So I'm thinking that it might be more of a lens issue? Did you test your Safari with another lens? If so, was the vignetting still as unacceptable? The thing that I found very odd with the Safari was the LCD. It is markedly warmer than the M240! Even the menu page is a warmer shade of grey. Haha. But when the images are downloaded into the computer, it looks nothing like what was reflected on the LCD. So that was a little freaky. But after using the M240 for almost 2 years, I'm quite comfortable with its auto white balance most of the time. The Safari's auto White Balance seems to be similarly reliable so I guess keeping the faith and if need be, colour correcting in-software. Just ignore the LCD's colour rendition. I think the Leica stores in Singapore might still have a couple of sets floating about. You might wish to give them a call.

whartan Posted April 16, 2015 Share #17 Posted April 16, 2015 Nuggie, Do you think the 35mm f2 lens is just harsher compared to 1.4? Or you are referring to the particular safari edition 35mm? And with the LCD does this mean the M-P display is warmer compared to the 240? Thanks.

Yes, the LCD is warmer on the Safari M-P compared to the 240. Its very strange and I really don't know why it is like that. And I really can't be bothered with checking with the aftercare people as they are not of very much help when it come to matters like this.
