M9 to M-P sensor trade up question, was given a refurbished one instead

It would be absurd to be taking meter readings for them to count as a 'shutter actuation', unlike video in which the shutter opens then closes at the end of the sequence.

Why would it be absurd? Surely the point of knowing the shutter actuation count is to know how many times the shutter has opened and closed so that you can get some idea of potential shutter wear and the rough likelihood of how soon you might need a new one. The exposure count is less interesting because sensors and the associated electronics aren't going to wear out (in Leicaland sensors just corrode:D).

Not necessarily. Even without that knowledge it would be useful to know, when buying a used camera, if it had undergone 150,000 shutter actuations or 5,000, irrespective of whether those actuations were actual exposures or metering/live view related. Sometimes you have to use a little bit of common sense in life (something you don't always see around these parts).

Wouldn't the rest of the camera show traces of such use? Assuming it is not the Lenny Kravitz edition..:D

Still, I am intrigued by the reason that this figure has been hidden.

Why would it be 'common sense' to see all the shutter actuations?

The shutter opening and closing for a meter reading is a leisurely affair and doesn't give any indication of how much the camera has been used in anger that the actual exposure count does. A pro photographer will be biased towards actual exposures and fewer meter checks by a big margin, a rank amateur will be biased towards a lot of meter readings and pointing the camera around the room scenario's, with fewer exposures. But seeing all the actuations they could be the same number with one camera straight back from Afghanistan and the other still warm and pampered by the coal effect fire in the front room and de-humidified case.

The shutter opens and closes for a meter reading?

I don't agree that a user needs to know the exact shutter count. Close enough by the picture count is fine with me.

A shutter actuation is a shutter actuation, however, whether fired for a picture or not.

I was invited to the grand opening party of the local Leica store. Mr. Horn, President of Leica USA, a fine gentleman, along with Mr. Wagner, National Sales Manager, another fine gentleman, were attending the event. I brought up the issue of severe vignetting with my newly aquired M-P with Mr. Wagner, in the mean time my wife was chatting with Mr. Horn, who promised that he will travel to Tokyo to "import" the Japanese way of customer service.

After examining the issue and testing my M-P with the 35mm Summilux asperical, Mr. Horn gave permission to Mr. Wagner to swap with another new M-P. This happened by chance as we were there way earlier before the party started. We stayed on for party and had a great time. This is definitely my best Leica experience. I would also like to thank Leica Ginza Tokyo, Leica Miami and Kenmore Camera for enhancing my Leica experience. Great customer service!

Turn M9 on, press delete, up up, down down down down, left left left, right right, info. Scroll down to debug info, shutter actuation count should be listed.

Thanks for this tip. Is the figure that shows valid? If yes, then why would anyone go through the trouble of using software or exif data to figure out the number of actuations - when it is sitting right there in the camera? Is there a catch somewhere?

It is not much trouble to find it through EXIF. Look up unique image nr. on you last image, run through hex converter and voilá.  As said before.Fewer clicks than the service menu.
