Magazines do have a lead time.....

So do cameras! Sorry, couldn't resist.

There is not much point reading such a report weeks after the camera has been released. Surely Michael has NDAs and the like to ensure that he can have the camera in time to release his piece at the same time as the camera release ...

Just like " Doe Letzten M6 " .

Only diffenerece is, that you paid € 1000,- extra for just the extra inscription and a wooden box. Btw, is the also a wooden box?

Nope....no wodden box.  The usual M240 box which I am glad cos all these bloody bulky fancy boxes just takes up a crap load of space!!!  :lol:  Kinda like those fancy boxes for those fancy super expensive watches!!!  :blink:

Back to Keith's original post for a minute:

This announcement came out on February 20. It's now 37 days on and my understanding is that the 1500 Safari kits that had been made are nearly sold out - as in 90% gone. It sounds as if sales of the Safari set have been rather lively. That tells something about the commitment of the worldwide clan of Leica connoisseurs...

I was in Selfridges London last Thursday and they had both a Safari set and a 60th Anniversary set on display - the shop guy said it was the last Safari they had. Have to admit that seeing the Safari for the first time, I thought it looked really cool AND if i din't have an M (or a 35mm lens) already then I'd love it.

As it is, what is the point when the new M is imminent?!  Call me a sourpuss but it's not as if the Safari or an M-P is going to take better pictures... the only really dramatic improvement in the M-P over the M was the 2GB buffer (res, and the glass).  Still, if I could afford the depreciation on my M I'd trade in for a safari edition!!!

The M60 is gorgeous and I never use a neck strap, so if it had a screen I might be tempted ... am I missing something ;)

I love special editions. 10% appeal to me but I love the variation and ability of a camera user to have something a bit more unique

@VictoriaC -

I have heard via someone in the know that a new Monochrom is going to be announced soon, probably by mid summer, perhaps late summer.  I would not expect the successor to the M-P to be imminent, though.  I'm not sure what improvements the M-P successor can bring, other than perhaps more megapixels and/or higher ISO;  Leica set the bar awfully high with the M240 and M-P cameras.

I would not expect an auto sensor clean function - from what I have read, there simply is no room for it in the current digital M envelope.  In spite of my initial misgivings, not having auto sensor cleaning has not been a problem in the real world.  A little care with regard to cleanliness - along with mindfulness about when, where and how lenses are changed -  goes a long way.

You are very likely right on all counts regarding the 240 successor. To be honest, I can't imagine what I would gain from it apart from higher ISO and an inbult digital VF (a la Fuji Pro-1). Now that I've bought an noctilux 50 (and trying to use it constantly as my main lens) I am also having the EVF on all the time and I find it just a little irritating as I had really got used to just using the RF but I just can't get the sharp focus at 0.95 without the EVF.

i carry my 240 with me all the time (and I really really like the M-P's look... why I didn't buy it instead of the M last year I don't know!) and since last September when I bought it I've taken about 4500 photos with it but even though I hardly use the M6 or M7 now I just can't bring myself to sell them I still find them incredibly pleasing in so many ways). I have however bought a Summilux-R 50 which is being converted to a Nikon mount which I'm hoping will tempt me into using my Nikon F100 or FM3a again in which case I might just let go of the M6 and M7 in advance of the new Monchrom which I know I will buy!

Do the maths - the renewal cycle for the digital M series is: two years - facelift - one year-new model. The M 240 successor is due this year. Possibly August September.

The Monochrom is on a longer cycle , as stated by Leica. But it may have been speeded up by the sensor corrosion problems, Leica would probably like to replace it sooner. Maybe sometime this year in the same time span  with the M successor, or possibly Photokina next year (which, I am sure, was the original plan)

You better re-phrase that to ANNOUNCE this year.  :)
