Am surprised that there is not already something on the forum regarding the latest (collectors) special edition:-

Leica Announces Leica M-P (Typ 240) Safari Set with Silver 35mm f/2 ASPH

Leica’s safari/olive edition cameras date back to 1960 with the Leica M1 ‘Olive‘. Made initially for the military, the safari/olive cameras’ unique color stands out. Over the years, a handful of safari/olive editions were produced. Many of these limited edition cameras are highly prized collectibles. The Leica M-P Set ‘SAFARI’ has an olive lacquered top cover, leatherette and bottom plate. The shutter speed dial, the On/Off switch, the release button, the hot shoe and some other details have a silver finish. The engraving on the top cover is reminiscent of the first safari camera in 1960 and has the classic Leica logo inscribed on one line and the wording ‘WETZLAR GERMANY’ on the second line. The 35mm /f2 ASPH has a silver chrome finish with a matching classic round metal lens hood. This set comes in a new packaging including a presentation box.

There are 1500 sets available worldwide. The technical data of the camera and lens are identical to the standard versions.

Abomination or desirable? The ideal accessory for the huntin'/shootin'/fishin' outdooorsie type?

Actually a pretty good deal, price-wise.

Yes it is:

Meister Camera Hamburg - Leica Spezialist seit 1925: LEICA M-P (Typ 240) Set "SAFARI" : Produkte

I'm also interested in the thought if this is the " end " of the M 240 as we know it. Still puzzeled why they did not make a Leica M9 Safari. Or did they?

This set is actually quite nice.

The main reason being that buying this set with the M-P 240 and 35 Cron ASPH, plus leather strap, SD card holder and wallet, will cost you $1000 less than buying a standard M-P 240 and 35 Cron (no SD card holder, wallet or strap included either).

So anyone that could be interested in buying a 240 and 35 Cron new will save money, and receive more, by buying this set.

Man- I like this camera a lot- it looks great. And it doesn't cost 20,000?? It is actually cheaper than the sum of its regular parts? What the? Has Leica turned over a new leaf? If I hadn't already got an M- I would get this one for sure.

PLUS- just noticed the camera has the frameline lever back where it should be!!!???

Anyone want just the lens- and to swap camera for Black?

Not tempted, but I quite like it:

IMHO the pricing is not due to Leica being considerate - but rather a reflection on soft sales ; beyond the expected decline due to new model anticipation.

On the other hand a olive green MP or M-A with dials and levers in green or black ( as per the M4-2 safari ) would get serious consideration.

is it?

"Ein faires Angebot: Die limitierte Version kostet lediglich 500 Euro mehr gegenüber dem Listenpreis. "

IMHO it cost € 500,- more , German:" mehr " than the sum of its regular parts...

No, it costs $1000 less in the US and €500 less in the EU.

And you also get a nice real leather strap, leather SD card holder and wallet.

Could you break this down in expected sales vs. actual sales numbers please?

YES IT IS PAULUS! Don't be so easily jaded... let me school you:

How much is it that Leica charges these days to engrave the Leica Script logo onto the top of a camera? What cost for custom leatherette? :p

A Non Standard Leica Lens Hood!! that thing would cost SERIOUS Dollars if Leica offered them for sale...

I imagine a custom OEM Leica leather strap- not to Mention A Card HOLDER- (wow) would cost a small fortune... $$

And what price to get a frame preview lever installed on an M240 I wonder? That's possibly not even possible (except maybe for Seal)...

all this for € 500??

Methinks: NO- the package deal costs less than the sum of its parts.

add to that- the set will almost certainly retain a slightly higher resale vale
