wattsy Posted February 26, 2015 Share #81 Posted February 26, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I wonder whether people will really put it in a glass case. I haven't seen it in person, but judging from the photos it pretty much begs to be used. Two great lenses, and you don't have to worry about scratching anything. The moment you buy it, you're already past that point of worrying about scratching the new paint. I don't see how it begs to be used any more than a standard M-P and equivalent lenses – if anything, anyone with any sense will recognise it as a $25,000 kit and treat it like they might any other special edition. It's absurd to think it is anything like a customer buying a 'user' camera of some kind. The pre-brassing is a factory contrived decorative effect and not user wear – it's almost a form of trompe-l'œil – and collectors (as opposed to users) will almost certainly not want to damage the mint original factory product. Many will not even open the box. To think otherwise is to totally misunderstand the collector mentality. I find it curious that many here seem unable to recognise the degree of artifice involved here, unable to recognise how, with this product, Leica is effectively mocking it's own customers. Jan Böttcher Posted February 26, 2015 Share #85 Posted February 26, 2015 Okay, probably not a hoax, as we know he uses a Leica M and a special edition from him has been rumoured. But it's not on Leicarumors yet, and not on the Leica website yet, that I can see... So, presuming this image is real, what do you think? I personally love the idea of brassed up old black cameras and lenses... but this isn't. It's brand new. Does that make it too affected in style - too pretentious, too "poseur"? ... Failed to get the paint job done properly over decades, now they call it a feature ...
Rick Posted February 26, 2015 Share #86 Posted February 26, 2015 Why would Kirk be jealous of somebody buying a camera? Exactly. I don't know either. Also, why would somebody decide what somebody else might want to buy or how they should view a camera? Maybe, it is the same group that posts over and over again questions like: What lens should I buy? or Chrome or Black, which should I buy? I thought there was more tolerance for non-conformance and individuality here. By the way, all of the bag posts on this forum are so hypocritical. But, people continue to post that one bag looks better because of the way it is worn or some other way it is finished. And, a lot of these bags are ridiculously expensive as well. And, if you want to see a really well groomed bunch of obsequious hateful thought police, go over to TOP and read Mikes screed about the Lenny M. You can read the comments and see what kind of person Mike has groomed for his blog. Must be nice to be part of the TOP group and be told how to think correctly. pico Posted February 26, 2015 Share #88 Posted February 26, 2015 Also, I don't understand why the worn finish isn't viewed as beautiful. Rick, consider getting a never-used black paint Leica and doing it yourself, your way. No?
Rick Posted February 26, 2015 Share #89 Posted February 26, 2015 Rick, consider getting a never-used black paint Leica and doing it yourself, your way. No? It isn't the same thing. Here is an example. Our kitchen cabinets have a distressed look. Some guy beat them with chains or something else and then they made them look like worm holes. Next, they painted them one color and put another coat on and rubbed it off in the corners. I'm sure you have seen this look. Some like it some don't. Now, ask me why I didn't just by some cabinets from Home Depot and proceed to wear them out myself. Should I believe that my cabinet compay stepped over the line making these cabinets? What if they marketed them as the Chef Ramsey tantrum cabinets and only sold 125 sets? The curfuffle over this plum alludes me. Rick

Krug Posted February 26, 2015 Share #91 Posted February 26, 2015 I am absolutely resigned to the fact that this comment tells far more about me than anything else - however I had to google this gentleman's name to find who Mr. Lenny Kravitz was. Now if Leica had been offering a "von Karajan" special edition in memory of a really great musician who embodied meticulous professionalism and with a desire to enrich their brand thereby I would have understood and been impressed. I still would not buy it but I would have been impressed. However if it keeps them profitable so be it ..... but I still think old Herbert would have been rather more appropriate if less marketable perhaps. Rick Posted February 26, 2015 Share #93 Posted February 26, 2015 How about if Leica had made an Ashton Kutcher addition. For those that don't know of Ashton, he is a highly regarded American actor with such credits as Punked, the TV documentaries, Two and a Half Men, and of course, he seems to be a photographer of some renown as he is shown taking candid shots at parties in commercials for some brand I'm not sure which one. (Me being hateful) Anyway, wattsy, I agree that Mike lost me on this one too. In fairness he does have some good writing now and again. But, I don't understand the Lenny bashing. Lenny seems to have an interest in Leica M cameras like us, has some really nicely mastered CDs and he does have a cool musical groove! Rick

pico Posted February 26, 2015 Share #95 Posted February 26, 2015 Some guy beat them with chains or something else and then they made them look like worm holes. That was my favorite job. The worm holes were made by shooting the wood with a shotgun and fine shot (#12). Maybe I'll shoot a Leica and auction it. .
lanetomlane Posted February 26, 2015 Share #96 Posted February 26, 2015 My Land Rover's looking a bit brassed and rough round the edges but for some unknown reason the dealer isn't prepared to offer me a premium for it. In all seriousness this doesn't turn me on, but as others have rightly pointed, out if it helps Leica make a profit which they then use to develop products that I am interested in then best of luck to them. ________________ Cheers, Tom
Edward Louis Marit Posted February 26, 2015 Share #97 Posted February 26, 2015 How about a Milli Vanilli edition. It could take plagiarized photographs by someone more skilled than the user and load them automatically onto the SD card. Or the U2 edition in cooperation with Apple - automatically loads your photographs into everyone in the world with an iTunes account whether they want them or not..,,

Rick A lot of them raised funds to help him buy his new house. Not much fun anymore over at TOP for me. Jeff Rick, I agree with you on the Lenny M special edition, but these comments about Mike/TOP and his readers are undeserved and way over the top. Reasonable (and non-hateful) people can and do disagree about this camera. Although I disagree with Mike on this topic, his site is a unique place for writing about photography and very diverse opinions are expressed there. Anyone can comment there, and there's no such thing as being "part of the TOP group" where you're told how to think. Jeff, he is self-employed and a continuous source of interesting, well-crafted writing about so many aspects of photography (not just gear). Should he not be able to buy a modest house? It seems to me that a talented writer about photography should be able to make a living it at, at least as much as someone with initials KR who apparently makes a living publishing provocative and often silly opinions about photo gear.
