When the Ralph Gibson edition Monochrom came out it had something to say so did Mr. Gibson.

Ralph Gibson for many years stood by film and said digital cameras were no good for various reasons. I for one believed that he was being honest. When he talked about the Monochrom recently and said that it was actually a good camera and he liked working with it I again did not question his frankness. In the end it was a statement made by Leica to turn on a master photographer into using a digital Leica telling the world that digital Leicas can have souls as well. For the first time the Edition Thing made a point. Few months later we are taught another lesson with the LK edition: Dr. Kauffman has no long term marketing strategy. No wonder their partners are pissed.

We the enthusiasts do not look up to above average musicians. We want to see professional photographers posing with the cameras we own or want own.

Are you really sure? Or do you actually want to see some very specific professional photographers who work in quite specific genres posing with Leicas? Its a serious question.

When the LK was announced a good majority thought it was stupid.

Now we learn that it is not called an LK edition but " reporter" or whatever and it is only designed by LK. What makes this guy a designer? He's not a visual artist. He's the guy that sang "are you gonna go my way?"

Rubbing paint off a camera and saying "this guy thought it was cool" is not design.

Changing the leather and calling it Hermes is not design either. Hermes and the Rocker dude will get a kick out of it, I mean who wouldn't like to be associated with such a brand? But meanwhile Leica's image is going down the drain. This camera used to represent the German sense of design and engineering God's sake. What happened?

That's an excellent question. You are right I want see specific photographers posing with Leicas. Genres? I'm not sure. Leica made it's name through documentary but also sneaked it's way into art and fashion.Take Liebovitz and Eggleston, two very different photographers who preferred Leicas for certain works. I get a kick out of it when I watch something that shows them with a Leica. Seeing Leicas on celebrities and knowing Leica Managers are getting a hard on from this annoys me. The only people who don't get this brand are the people who run the damn company.

I'm unclear why everybody thinks Blackstone promoted this person to CEO. Blackstone doesn't own the company and are only a minority investor/partner.

According to the article about the former CEO's ouster, his removal was due to Blackstone's dissatisfaction. I'm sure with a 44% stake in the company they had influence in deciding who his successor would be.

This has got to be my favorite thread, ever. Such an entertaining storyline. We have posters full of righteous indignation and pure hate for the poor musician that likes to use a Leica - how dare him? And, how dare Leica rub the paint off our M and call it a limited addition. :p

This Leica stuff is serious business. Shooting indigents and bums in the back streets of our cities with $25,000 worth of camera gear is serious photography. Glaring looks looks captured in 24MB of glorious B&W and 18MB of pure CCD bliss is very serious business. How dare Leica indulge in a little self-promotion with celebrities and musicians? This sort of nonsense is unheard of in marketing.

Not to mention those Leica company dupes that know nothing about the heritage, brand, and essence of the M like we do. Forget that the M8 was brilliant, a sort of AED for a dying camera company. The M9 was a second step forward out of the darkness. And, the M240 is just sublime. Can't wait to see what those punters come up with next.

And, don't forget minority share holder Blackstone, the evil antagonist character in our story. Can't have a really good plot without a Blackstone. Name seems like a little bit of a stretch, though. :D

The Leica Hermes was not just about the leather, it had a completely different top plate design.

Oh my god, that radical top plate design was worth the price. But, to think they changed the leather as well. Once again, a generous gift from Leica and every one was snapped up by savey buyers. And Patrick thought it was just a leather cover they changed.

Pay attention, Sir, the bottom plate is different as well! :D

Re the leather. At the introduction I was carrying, as it happened, an M9 with exactly the same colour scheme. That caused a bit of confusion with Mr Daniel and dr. Kaufmann...:D

Such innovation! Delete the hot shoe! As clear a sign as any is needed, Leica photographers must NOT use flash! (or lenses wider than 28mm........)

Lol! A bit late for this, they are sold out... Maybe you can get one worn to

the brass example for a super-special edition.:D

To be fair, the camera looks beautiful, although not very functional. At least the LK edition has the same ergonomics as the real cameras.

Agreed, it does look very nice, and I guess if you are going to make a Special Edition for the collectors market then functionality isn't the main consideration.

It's more credible than the Kravitz.

Ok I was wrong about the Hermes.

I also admit the LK edition is kinda cool.

The only reason I was against it is that first I thought LK's head is too big to be a good musician but I know now that his head is actually has a normal size but his body is abnormally small compared to it. This makes him ergonomically uncomfortable to use.

From the acoustic point of view the large penis is also a deal breaker. But I get the brassing thing I really do. Also the name " the correspondent" in relation to him being a Rock Star and everything it all makes sense.

cheers

All criticism aside (and I'm sure someone else might have mentioned this some time in the past 11 pages of this thread), I like the idea of having a 50mm summilux asph housed in the over version bodies. That's pretty unique and cool to me.

I fully agree. In reading the description, that's the one thing that stood out to me and made me think- "Oh hey now, that's cool".

The snake skin + the snake skin briefcase is pretty damn cool too imo.

As for the camera, I think it looks good. Really good actually.

First thing I thought of was 'steampunk'.

Pre-battered 'looking' from the factory... Kind of corny, but nothing new. No different then buying jeans that are already washed and faded I guess.

I will admit- I don't love that such a good looking camera got designated 'the Lenny kravtiz' edition. He's just... Kind of silly & irrelevant to me. I mean... Lenny Kravitz? Seriously?

My shooter friends would crack on me to no end for using a 'Lenny Kravitz' camera.

I can think of 37,632 other musicians who would be a cooler choice for a namesake, not to mention professional photographers, design houses and icons.
