DIY Extension tube (M240/M-P240 only)

Just thought i would share my latest crazy idea.

i bought a set of cheap body and lens bayonet caps of Ebay, cost me about $10 delivered.

I spent a few hours yesterday gluing them together, boring a hole through the middle and grinding it out with a dremel, and sanding the inside (for a matte finish, it still needs painting though)

i also thoroughly washed the tube, with a scrubbing brush, to remove any traces of dust, dried it with a towel and let it sit for a few hours before i mounted it to the camera.

the end result is a DIY extension tube that cuts my 50mm Summarit's min focus distance from 0.8m down to about 0.1m (Needs to be used with an M240 or M-P240, as you need the Live View to focus)

Pic 1 is an uncropped frame from the lens/tube combo - the lego man is a normal size.

Pic 2 shows it attached to the body and lens, and pic 3 is a set of caps on the right, and the tube on the left

the bayonet fits tightly, but the lens/tube fit is friction only, so it isn't something i would mount the lens to for a walk, but would fit and remove it as needed - the tube/body does latch, as the caps i bought have recesses for the locking pin.

Good thinking!

Looks easier to me to use some old Visoflex adapter like 14464 with some old Elmarit. At least your lens will be safe that way.

Of course this would set you back a few hundred dollars in stead of $10 :)

Come to think of it, if you slap on a Visoflex II or III with mirror locked, you could just use it as a spacer for your lens too!

Using a good macro R lens with adapter is even better of course...

Crazy!? Not!

By the way, you can vary the magnification by using the same extension tube with different lenses. Shorter focal lengths will give higher magnifications; longer focal lengths, lower.

I could try those options, but i like DIY type stuff, and this was more of an experiment to see if it works - I'm looking forward to getting an Olympus OM-M mount adapter, so i can use it with my Olympus "macro" lenses (not really macro as they don't do 1:1, but do focus close, should focus even closer mounted to this)

realistically this is a toy, i don't do much macro, and when i do i use the 1DX and a 100mm macro lens, but i do sometimes get frustrated with the 0.8m min focus distance of the summarit

I only have the one lens at the moment (until i get and OM-M adapter) but thats good to know !

Brilliant !!! And has made me think of a way to capitalize on my OTZFO :)... gaining a variable extension tube... ;) (just a little reluctant because it would mean to alter definitvely a venerable old accessory.... which on the LEM/VIS still has a sense with its "native" Elmar 65)

I would say it works quite well ! (despite focusing issues with the narrow DOF and looking at a screen in daylight)

This one has been cropped a bit, but the finished file is still 2500px square
