He arrived at my 'studio' (front sitting room converted for the occasion), it was stinking hot and we were both suffering, and then I turned my lights on! He confessed to being very nervous, which utterly surprised me. I declared that I thought I was more nervous and so we both laughed and relaxed. I set him in front of the backdrop I had hand painted and we both had a really good session. Hasselblad 500CM & 150mm sonnar, shooting FP4 if I recall. I must retrieve the films and revisit a few more of the exposures. Welcome, dear visitor! As with my other recent portraits, I met him at his exhibition (in his own house) on the fringe of the Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles the week before last. The exhibition was of photos about agave cultivation and mescal production in Mexico, and the communities that develop around them. They are passionate about the agave; if it was not obvious from their conversation, I was left in no doubt after visiting his bathroom. Lovely friendly people.
