I never cease to be astonished and delighted with my Monochrom files - both the detail and tonal range. Mine is also a keeper.

 

I'm really enjoying using l again in my M7 but that would not replace the Monochrom.

I suspect people aren't selling their MM's simply because of what they see when they post process an image. It offers far higher resolution than the M240 and with an ISO range that is like a palette of styles, from LF smooth to beautiful 8000 ISO graphic grain. At no point need an owner come up against the psychological barrier of finding the image gets ugly if the camera is pushed.

 

Whether this is a result of the CCD sensor or not will only be discovered when the next version is released. But if the current MM's 18mp sensor performs like a 36mp sensor, then the 24mp CMOS should take effective resolution above the 40mp mark. If the M9 maxed out for many people at 1600 ISO, but the MM can make attractive images at 8000 ISO, then the M240's 2500 ISO ugly barrier will be smashed and taken to 20,000 ISO. If there are the same comparable improvements when the M240 becomes the MM240, and that isn't certain.

 

The current MM isn't about build quality (it is still better made than pretty well all my other cameras that compete with it) or which camera has the quietest shutter, at the moment the MM is about simple raw ability. On that basis the current owners are in an enviable position. It is still a step up from the M240 regarding resolution and tonality, it will still have a unique character from it's CCD sensor over any replacement, and it still holds on to the idea of a simple camera without the M240 bloat that will affect a replacement.
