What's the difference between "500£ cashback" and "500£ off"?

The difference between the dealer taking the £500 hit or the manufacturer. With so many camera companies needing to sell older models at strategic times of year a camera shop's sales figures would be going up and down like a yoyo if all the manufacturer did was charge less whenever they felt like it. It also wouldn't take account of old stock bought in at the old price. So 'cashback' was invented to smooth the effects of seasonal discounts for the shop. It is the equivalent of the manufacturer having a 'sale' to move older stock, not the shop having a 'sale'.
