28 f2.0 or 24 f2.8?

I do not have 2.8/24 but using 2/28 and 1.4/35. 2/28 is much sharper. I have it for 1 week, using it almost all the time. Pic was made wide open. Jaka

The 28 cron can use the contax GG-1 screw in hood (46mm). It can also use the Leica 12589, the hood that comes with the 35mm summilux asph

for me the decision also depends which other lenses yo are using. i have either the 1,4/35 asph with me, or the 2/28 plus one of the 50mm lenses (very often the Noctilux..) .. the step between 28 and 50 mm is not so big, the impressions with the 28 are more natural, not so distorted, also in my kind of reportage photographie. Beside that, the 2 28 ist the very best wider lens i know; it is nearly apochromatic, and with open aperture one speed faster AND better than the 24.

Bill- I just got the 24 elmarit yesterday. It is spectacular. It's 2.8 is equivalent to the 50 lux's 1.4, that is they are the best wide open that I have seen in their FL. The 24 has the best edge to edge sharpness of any lens I have used, and it has a center resolution that is simply stunning, even at 2.8. I also really like my 28/2.8 ASPH, especially stopped down. I used it a lot at f8 on a trip to Amsterdam last week and loved it. It is punchier/higher contrast than the 24. It's small size, light weight, and lack of interference with the finder adds to it's utility. Guess I'm saying I think they make an excellent pair. I still can't comment on the 28 cron, never had the pleasure. best...Peter

I have 21, 24 , 28/2.0, 35/1.4asph wides and use on the M8:

 

28/2.0 most of the three; 1) because of f2.0 its my available light lens 2) its small and light 3) I dont have any focus issues (which I have with the 35(/1.4asph) 3) its a nice combo with the 50/1.4asph

 

21/2.8 second most, because:1) I like the somewhat lower contrast compared to the 24/2.8 2) Its a nice travel combo together with the TE 28-35-50 3) I like the FOV on the M8

Both lenses a little less contrasty which I like...transitions between tones seem very fine IMO

 

24/2,8 advantage I see is that you dont need an external viewfinder, however its tight and you have to screw off the 1.25 magnifier each time you use the 24.

Hi Guys,

 

Thanks very much for all the comments and sample photos. I had to send the M8 back to Solms today, and despite the fact I was still equivocating over the 24 or 28 Summicron, I decided to make a choice now so they can hopefully check the focus of whatever camera they return to me, both with the new 28 Summicron and my 50 f1.4ASPH, which I returned as well. The 50 has back focused on both of my M8s.

 

My thinking was I use the Leicas mostly inside or in lower light situations (despite the wonderful high ISO results of the much larger, heavier 1Ds2), and the Summicron is one stop faster, which means one ISO level lower than I might have to choose with the f2.8 lens. Furthermore, reading Seans tests leads me to believe the 28 Summicron is a bit less contrasty, leading to more open shadow areas, hence detail easier to bring out in a print. I also think the 28 Summicron is sharper than my 35 f1.4 ASPH lens. I do have the 28 f2.8ASPH, but as Peter mentioned, this lens is more contrasty than the 24 f2.8. If I really need a wide lens, which is rare, I have the 21 f2.8ASPH. That said, the comments such as those from Peter (which remind me of my comments about the APO75), and sample pics posted here and from Brent may well lead me to buy the 24 from my dealer....So, for now (when I am with an M8 again), I expect to take the 28 f2.0, 50 f1.4ASPH and APO 75 f2.0 (I love these two lenses!) with me most of the time.
