luigi bertolotti Posted December 2, 2014 Share #3 Posted December 2, 2014 If is good, at that price is a bargain... a fine lens I stupidly sold some years ago... ; only warning... the UVIR filter for M8.... is a bit complicated to have one... if the lens has its own rubber hood, probably the best way is to adapt some std. E39 filter onto a series 5,5 mount, so that you retain the filter with the hood itself (time ago someone in the forum illustrated a do-it-yourself solution of this kind). pgk Posted December 2, 2014 Share #5 Posted December 2, 2014 From memory, the lens takes an unusual Series 5.5 filter (this is unthreaded with the filter fitted into a metal band mount which is held in place by the hood). To use a UVIR filter (which is not available in Series 5.5 as far as I am aware) with this lens on the M8, you will have to do something like fitting the unmounted UVIR glass from an E39 UVIR filter instead or figure out some other method of fitting a UVIR filter (adapters have been made but I think are uncommon). This is a bit of a messy compromise but is worth sorting out as the lens is excellent and the UVIR filter will certainly help (I've done this and the lens/camera are an excellent combination). There have been discussions on the forum about this problem before so it may be worth a search on 'series 5.5' to see what solutions have been suggested. The attached picture was shot with an M8, and the kissing cousin of the 90 Elmar-C, the 90 Tele-Elmarit-M, during the 2008 Democratic Convention here in Denver. A wonderful focal length on the M8. Made the camera workable (along with the original SM 15 C/V, also tricky to filter). ___________________________ On the original topic - the only knock I've heard on the 90 Elmar-C is that, for space and cost reasons, it has a machined sloped focus cam surface, rather than a flat surface that moves in and out by way of an internal lens helix (in effect, the 90 C's cam IS the helix, for RF movement purposes). I.E. The surface that touches the camera's roller is angled. Thus any slight mispositioning of the cam or the roller, sideways, will lead to an incorrect deflection of the rangefinder, and misfocusing. Never tested it myself, and haven't even seen a 90-C for decades. But it might be worth checking. Welcome, dear visitor! When I was using it on my M8, i simply screwed an E39 UV/IR filter on the original rubber hood and anything was ok. Never had a single problem in more than six years.
