uroman Posted November 28, 2014 Share #1 Posted November 28, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have read rumors that the MM is due for replacement. Is there any actual verifiable evidence on this? I was about to consider an m240, but then I realized that i convert >90% of my photos to black and white. I have an M9. It would be nice to have a little information. I don't want to spend 8k on a MM if next gen is imminent. Used MMs are very pricey compared to M9s or m240s. You don't need to spend 8k on an MM; great used copies or QM2 models can be found for ~US$6k. Buy it now, use it until the hypothetical MM2xx materializes. Realize that when it does appear, it will invariably be in short supply for the first year. Shoot the MM now, sell it when your MM2xx arrives in Q4 2015 or Q1 2016. fahadm Posted November 28, 2014 Share #3 Posted November 28, 2014 Digital cameras will continue to depreciate, whether MM1 or MM2. Its a sunk cost. The MM1 has Kodak's last-ever CCD sensor (prior to bankruptcy). That sensor justifies the MM1 premium. The MM1 prints are nothing short of astonishing. Get it and enjoy it today. You may keep it after all!
wattsy Posted November 28, 2014 Share #4 Posted November 28, 2014 As the old saying goes: be careful what you wish for. The Monochrom may be clunky with it's occasional freezes, loud "click-whirr" shutter noise, blurred LCD previews, and susceptibility to sensor corrosion (as I have discovered:mad:) BUT it does have a pretty unique CCD sensor that, when you point it at something interesting in the right light, can help make astounding and/or beautiful photographs. An updated CMOS Monochrom will be an attractive product for many reasons but will it have the same magic?
M-Mount Posted November 28, 2014 Share #5 Posted November 28, 2014 Better would be a MM without IR Filter at all as an option.
Jeff S Posted November 28, 2014 Share #6 Posted November 28, 2014 I have read rumors that the MM is due for replacement. Is there any actual verifiable evidence on this? Here's what Stefan Daniel said in a 2012 Photokina interview… Question: Will the M-Monochrom remain part of the M-System for the foreseeable future? Stefan Daniel: We want to keep the series of that type. The Monochrom is very successful and we can imagine that there might be a Monochrom variant of the new model. The camera is addictive. Just a matter of time, it seems. Jeff
Jeff S Posted November 28, 2014 Share #7 Posted November 28, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) An updated CMOS Monochrom will be an attractive product for many reasons but will it have the same magic? I thought b/w from my M8.2 was superb, but find that b/w print results from my M are as good, and often better. This may be due to various reasons, but the sensor doesn't seem to have 'ruined' anything...as many surmised…at least not for me. The whole workflow is key. But this debate will go on regardless…as it still does. Jeff
james.liam Posted November 28, 2014 Share #8 Posted November 28, 2014 Better would be a MM without IR Filter at all as an option. The degradation of image quality resulting from the stacking an IR filter along with color filters makes this highly unlikely.
Edward Louis Marit Posted November 28, 2014 Share #9 Posted November 28, 2014 I would love to have some of the same features as the M on my MM - chiefly better lcd, same battery so I don't need two chargers etc, but not at the expense of having a different sensor. My worry when the replacement comes out is a different sensor type may remove the magic. So I will probably just hang on to my type 1, I may even buy a backup 2nd one when the new one comes out on the theory that everyone will rush for the new one and I will be able to get the old one at a discount. Adrian Lord Posted November 28, 2014 Share #10 Posted November 28, 2014 The MM1 is so good I have no interest in MM2, especially if it has the bulk and gimmicks of the M240 cluttering things up.
jaapv Posted November 28, 2014 Share #11 Posted November 28, 2014 Hmmm... The bulk of my Monochrome and M240 are identical. This is really a silly Internet myth.
richfx Posted November 28, 2014 Share #12 Posted November 28, 2014 Hmmm... The bulk of my Monochrome and M240 are identical. This is really a silly Internet myth. I don't think so, as the exterior dimensions of my MM are identical to those of my M9, and those of the M240 are larger, in depth (42 vs 37mm) and weight (680 gr vs 600 gr), than the MM and M9. jaapv Posted November 28, 2014 Share #13 Posted November 28, 2014 Wrong. The depth is virtually the same, within the mm. I would say my M240 is 37.5 mm thick...You include the thumbrest. The weight difference is mainly the battery.
IWC Doppel Posted November 28, 2014 Share #14 Posted November 28, 2014 It's still for me noticeably thicker, the 240 body shape was a very small step in the wrong direction MP sized MM please
otto.f Posted November 28, 2014 Share #15 Posted November 28, 2014 Future sensor developments will make possible a thinner M, like an M4. Leica has always strived to produce the smallest high quality system camera. Anyway, I won't buy an MM2 which is as thick as the M240. Somewhere you have to stop making compromises, just like the M7 is just that little too heavy and that little too high

The X100 cameras intrigue me - the focal plane marking is much closer to the rear of the camera than anything else : wonder how they do it. Welcome, dear visitor! jloden Posted November 29, 2014 Share #17 Posted November 29, 2014 The X100 cameras intrigue me - the focal plane marking is much closer to the rear of the camera than anything else : wonder how they do it. IIRC, the lens assembly on the X100 goes back into the body quite a ways, similar to the RX1. The fixed lens nature of the camera allows it to be a lot more compact than would be possible when accounting for interchangeable lenses and a mount. Jeff S Posted November 29, 2014 Share #18 Posted November 29, 2014 It's still for me noticeably thicker... It may feel that way to you because of a different grip, prompted maybe by the added battery weight. But, sorry, you can't change the measurement facts, which are described here. All but 1mm of the difference is in the thumb rest. Jeff
jaapv Posted November 29, 2014 Share #19 Posted November 29, 2014 But Jeff, it is written on the Internet that it is bloated and thicker, so that is an inescapable fact....
wattsy Posted November 29, 2014 Share #20 Posted November 29, 2014 If it's thicker (even by 1mm) it's thicker. Not sure why the sarcasm, Jaap?
