I just updated to v1.008

My MM used to freeze on the silent mode after 3 shots , giving me the rewind sound a few seconds after I released my finger from the shutter. This problem seems to be gone.

Sorry, couldn't resist - old joke, I know.

If it's just for the new Summarits, I won't bother - shame they haven't taken the opportunity to deal with the residual bug fixes some have.

A shame indeed. I was out with my M-E yesterday, and I am sad to report that this bug in "discrete" mode persists with the new firmware. What's more, it happened on the first two shots I took (but then not again, admittedly).

I updated my M9 yesterday from 1.176 to 1.202 and found that it still froze the camera in discrete mode, which i use 90 per cent of the time. In an hour shooting may be 30 shots i noticed it 4 times. It was pretty nippy out on the South bank, London last night but not that cold. I'll stick with this update for a few more days and see before going back to the, in my experience, most successful ver of 1.176

Why use discrete. I never do. WTF do you do that makes it necessary? Are Ya shy? Do you think it really helps? I do not.

Leica was adventurous in offering the shutter-release modes, and it would have been better if they had not. No such modes would have obviates most whining. Seriously, do you need it?

I like the discreet mode because the rewind sound asks me " what's next?"

Just as in film camera I would rather hear that question at the moment I need to hear it. Also from time to time you may need pretend you didn't take a picture.

I find that i 'need' discrete mode for two reasons. Firstly having shot with a Leica film M for 15 years or so, not long compared to some here admittedly but i like the way Discrete mode slows you down and forces you to concentrate on the one photograph just as winding the film on did. I review the image in my minds eye, if happy then move on, i use the camera in the same way i've always done.

Secondly, I'm shooting more on sets of the Drama documentaries that i edit. I'm often one of a hand full of people in a small space with the actors filming. Discrete mode allows me to take a shot then either wait for the end of the take or slowly put the camera behind my back and release the shutter button if the scene allows.

So Pico, no I'm not shy and yes i think it helps.

Discreet mode did look like a good idea at the time, but I fear it is just impossible to implement correctly with the given hardware.

I love discreet mode, and use it all the time. My M9 has firmware 1.138, and has never had a problem. It came back from repair with a newer firmware version, and had issues right away. I downgraded back to 1.138, and never had a problem again.

I also shoot my MM a lot in discreet mode, and it stalls all the time. If it is a hardware issue, why does the same hardware perform differently with different firmware?

Discrete mode is very important in the theater for the people around you. I have it as a default in all my 4 Profiles (which are used for lenses without 6-bit code).

I sometimes have a lock-up, but absolutely not 90%.

Soft mode and Soft+Discrete are much much more error-prone on my MM and M9

It’s a timing issue I think. The firmware’s timing (which appears to have changed with modifications to the way files got written to the card) interacts with the shutter’s timing.

I am sorry people, I was mistaken. The bug is not fixed. The shutter freeze on discreet mode

is still with us.

I use discrete mode most of the time and have few lockups. I really like the ability to take the photograph and then drop the camera out of sight/sound to re-cock the shutter. I find the whole process to be much more...dare I say...discrete.
