A miller Posted November 6, 2014 Share #1 Posted November 6, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Stumbled upon this on Park Avenue this past Sunday. This group was protesting the radical Islamic fundamentalism represented by the ISIS movement. M3, 28mm Summaron, Portra 400 pushed one stop. Thanks and peace, Adam #1 Welcome, dear visitor! kinch123 Posted November 6, 2014 Share #3 Posted November 6, 2014 Clearly (from dress hints) the people pictured are Shias, so it would be a fair supposition that they are protesting against what Sunni ISIS is doing to any unfortunate Shias which ISIS can get their murdering hands on. Well taken!
stuny Posted November 6, 2014 Share #4 Posted November 6, 2014 An excellent set of reportage shots.
A miller Posted November 6, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted November 6, 2014 Many thanks, Paul, Kinch and Stuart. Much appreciated. Kinch - Thanks for sharing your perspective on this. Your insight is very interesting, and for some such as myself quite subtle. Which of these photos would you say captures the story most effectively? kinch123 Posted November 6, 2014 Share #10 Posted November 6, 2014 Ali, good point... and indeed a quick check online tells me it's Muharram. Doubtless a red flag to the ISIS bull.
kinch123 Posted November 6, 2014 Share #11 Posted November 6, 2014 Adam: I like #3 - composition/qibla and quietitude. #6 also - humanises what we're seeing, whilst still being a long way from Kansas.
A miller Posted November 6, 2014 Author Share #12 Posted November 6, 2014 Many thanks, Jaap, XV and (once agin) Kinch. Now i feel stupid because, although i stumbled on this, i could have easily asked for the horse to be walked right up close to the crowd that was praying. It would have made a world of difference in the first picture. I am a first generation Iraqi- America, but not Muslim. Thanks very much for the education. kinch123 Posted November 6, 2014 Share #13 Posted November 6, 2014 Oops I meant #5 instead of #6 in my comment above.
jaapv Posted November 6, 2014 Share #14 Posted November 6, 2014 What amazes me is that very few of the onlookers appear to have any interest.
A miller Posted November 6, 2014 Author Share #15 Posted November 6, 2014 Good observation. And it is spot on because Park Avenue is absolutely dead on Sundays.
roguewave Posted November 6, 2014 Share #16 Posted November 6, 2014 Adam, a very fine set & very comprehensive coverage. I applaud your verve!
A miller Posted November 6, 2014 Author Share #17 Posted November 6, 2014 Thanks, Ben. My verve promptly ended about 5 minutes from the start of the Dallas Cowboy game, which gave me just enough time to run home and get my jersey on.
Brenton C Posted November 7, 2014 Share #18 Posted November 7, 2014 I can hardly wait to try a roll of Portra 400 in my M3 . . . Though I don't pretend that'll make my pix turn out like yours.
A miller Posted November 7, 2014 Author Share #19 Posted November 7, 2014 Brenton - thanks very much but your full of hogwash . I'm sure you can do better. There are a lot things in these images that I would have done differently, from the perspective of both composition and exposure. I hope to run into this crowd again someday soon.... All the best, Adam
jedi996sps Posted November 7, 2014 Share #20 Posted November 7, 2014 I am a first generation Iraqi- America, but not Muslim. Thanks very much for the education. Hi Adam, I am 1st generation Northern Pakistani and am muslim, and still probably would have had to google it to give a coherent explanation . I have seen a white horse here in the UK when the Shia do their whipping on Ashura day. Now that would be great to photograph. I have some iranian friends and ask them when that is and see if i cant get along. I recall it was in the summer, otherwise it is a bit chilly here in the winter to be taking your shirt off.
