If a camera or lens does not meet specs , what does leica do? do items get repaired and then sold to dealers?

Dealer has a noct and 240p straight from leica full warranties ?

I've had two good experiences. Leica has a code for this ("QM2"), The not meet specs is not functional or mechanical but cosmetic and it is usually impossible to see anything at all. On the M-P I just bought (at a large good discount and with full warranty), the only thing I could find was that one corner of the box was slightly mashed in, On an earlier M, I could find nothing and the camera has been flawless (knock wood). Not sure about lenses but if you are covered by a Leica warranty, you are in good shape.

I ordered a new silver M240 QM2 camera this morning. Scheduled to be delivered Friday. Discount was very significant making it irresistible and couldn't pass it up. I'm curious to see if I can find the problem they found.

This has come up before. Can someone say for sure that items marked like this have failed inspection? My understanding is that to comply with ISO quality controls items are randomly taken from the end of the production line, opened and inspected and then sold at a discount as the same ISO specifications don't allow them to be re-injected into the production line. I don't know what happens if they fail this inspection; hard to imagine they would be sold.

I don't know what their inspection process is. It could be 100% as they are being assembled or just a sampling of the finished product. With the relative low numbers produced I would suspect that it is 100%. This would be good question for Leica.

How would you know if the camera is a "QM2"? Is it stamped on the camera somewhere, or appended to the serial number?

There was no marking on either of my two cameras, either on the camera or the box. The outer thin cardboard wrapper had some kind of marking but I don't remember what it was.

I suspect the post above re ISO inspections may be right but I don't have direct knowledge.

This is the first time I hear about the QM2 thanks to this forum. It's an eye opener.

I have been suspecting something like that since I bought my M9. I believe many of these cameras are sold in Asia as regular goods, some discounted by grey market dealers, and some at full price by some unscrupulous official dealers.

I am sure Leica knows something about it but probably won't take any open action in order to preserve the brand image.

Actually I think that Leica controls the distribution of QM2 items pretty closely. My dealer told me that they get a maximum of one per quarter (or per year, can't remember) as they are shared across authorized dealers. They are allowed to use these items as a way of passing on discounts to customers, and all are fully warrantied.

Any comments on qm2 lenses?

Same as the bodies, they are taken from the production line for random inspection and then can only be classed as 'used'. You have to remember Leica's quality control system is very tight, so an item doesn't get to the end of the production line before somebody decides it doesn't meet a specification, if anything is wrong it gets adjusted along the way. Opening boxes isn't just about looking at the camera or lens, it is about checking the packing and things like are all the leaflets included etc.

My QM2 M240 came this afternoon. On the outside of the thin cardboard protection box was a sticker that said:

Ausstellungsware: Funktionssicherheit

Lt. Leica Garantie wird gewährleistet

Google translation:

Exhibition goods: reliability

Lt. Leica warranty is guaranteed

The camera was manufactures on 3/5/14

I see no marks, issues or problems on the camera.

For $1700 savings I feel good.

My QM2 M-E had the same label on the box. My dealer told me that it was one of the models that had been on display in the cabinet at the Photokina launch in 2012. Given the timing of your purchase, right after Photokina, it's quite possible that your body has the same history.

Mine had certainly not been used - iirc it showed around 24 shutter actuations when I received it.

How did you determine the number of shutter actuations? TIA.
