After being through Central and East Africa for five weeks, I returned with over 5000 shots....:(.

Sent the M240 which performed well to CS for a well-deserved CLA and attention to two issues: slow shutter recock on a few occasions on the last few days ( only two corrupted files, but I took the precaution of switching off and on as soon as it occurred) and a stuck pixel which disappeared spontaneously after a short while. Time for some maintenance, methinks.

My Summicron 35 developed a bit of play in the front part.

Quite good as I remember the days of taking R cameras on such trips which invariably needed repair afterwards, one time I went in with three bodies and came out with one cobbled together and the last one working.

Anyway nose to the grinding stone AKA computer...

First quicky here: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/nature-wildlife/352377-tolerance.html#post2814551

It was utterly amazing, we had rare good fortune of a full 2 1/2 days of staying with a pack of Wild Dogs,12 adults and 7 puppies seeing all the social interaction and minor dramas.. A once-in-a-lifetime experience. I will put some stuff in the Photoforums later.

It is the shutter that makes a bit (s)lower sound like a longer shutterspeed, and it can be followed by corrupted files in the next shot(s). Not dramatic as the camera will remain working, just turn it off and on as soon as you hear it and the next files will be fine.

It has been described before and is usually cured by replacing an out-of-spec part.

The 35 Crons are known for that, they're glued together. Need to always remember to attach and detach the lens by the rearmost ring but admittedly it's hard not to put some pressure on the hood unless you have really thin fingers ;) Plus I think the glue eventually gets brittle no matter what.

I took an R system on one trip, nothing nearly as demanding as an African safari, and had the same experience. 3 bodies, none of them returned home without at least some malfunction. It's what prompted me to sell it off rather than get the DMR.

Speaking of DMR, did you take it along also or did you shoot all the telephoto stuff with the M240?

This happened to me few times over the last year and a half, but not for the at least last two, three months, and I almost forgot about it.

This is can only be caused by the hardware error, correct?

Should anyone who had a "slowed" shutter send the camera for a CLA? This should be covered by the warranty, correct?

105-280 sometimes with 1.4x extender on the M240 and 135 APO on NEX7 (very handy as it is a light combo which you can grab in a hurry), for the rest some wideangles 35 2.0 asph and 24 1.4. I rarely used the Summilux 50 asph or 18 SE.

What I noticed this time around that it is marvellous to be able to get your stills and do video with those long lenses too to supplement the rest of the journey's video. The quality is amazing and the sound no worse than any other non-full pro videocam.

AFAIK it is hardware error. I did not hesitate sending it in.

Btw the thermal EVF lockups seem to be cured.

My wife is the videographer, I never had the least interest in it for some reason. She uses the Panny version of the VLux4, which has AF, IS and an equivalent 24-600 constant f/2.8 zoom. For large prints the sensor doesn't cut it compared to the M240, but for video on a 65" HDTV I'm amazed at the quality.

I had one of the older 1Ds in the past. It lasted two trips, then it died on the job. Apart from that the 100-400 L cured any desire I might have had for Canon telezooms. (I must admit that I was quite taken by the 70-200 4.0, L though).

To summarise: thanks but I have been there....

The 1Ds was released 12 years ago. You have probably been there, but you should be ***here***

I've had a pair of 5D "classics" for years and the only problem I ever had was the red AF sensor finder lights went askew on one, but that was the result of me dropping the camera on the floor.

I'm with you 100% on the 100-400L zoom. Optically just so-so, and it sucked in dust like a vacuum cleaner. I sold all my L glass some time ago as I grew tired of lugging the weight around. For the (less-than-demanding) use I have for the 5D's these days I suffice with an adapted little Nikkor non-AI 20/4 (one of Galen Rowell's most-used lenses), 28-135-IS and 70-300-IS zooms, and the Leitz 400/6.8 Telyt.

Unfortunately I sold the Camel that used to carry my gear. (1Ds As in plural of 1D. Yes, I am happy to say it was quite a while ago. I was happy to replace it by the DMR and Leica lenses. Not that that was lightweight....)

Nowadays just the M, one long zoom, an extender and a small selection of M lenses, one small backup NEX. Liberating.
