marknorton Posted July 31, 2006 Author Share #41 Posted July 31, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well they have talked about "innovative wide-angle solutions" and another Tri-Elmar would certainly be that. Do you think this would be for a 1.33 crop camera only or would it be FF? If 28mm is the shortest focal length supported by the viewfinder (giving frames of 28, 35, 50, 75, 90), there would have to be a new aux finder to support 16, 18, 21 and 24mm lenses. Your comment about the 28mm Summicron/Viewfinder Frame puzzles me though. The 28mm Summicron will not be the same as the 21mm setting of the Tri-Elmar. billh Posted July 31, 2006 Share #42 Posted July 31, 2006 Do you think this would be for a 1.33 crop camera only or would it be FF? I don’t know. I assume it will be smaller and less expensive if it is only for the 1.33, but that would preclude its use for any later full frame digital camera. Your comment about the 28mm Summicron/Viewfinder Frame puzzles me though. The 28mm Summicron will not be the same as the 21mm setting of the Tri-Elmar. I was thinking if I bought the 28 Summicron, I would be able to use the viewfinder in the camera. With the tri focal lens, I would have to look through the auxiliary viewfinder to use the two widest focal lengths, but when I had it set to 28mm, I could see the coverage through the camera viewfinder. Is the crop 1.33, or 1.30? I seem to remember it is slightly less (more image area) than the digital R. If so, the 28 will cover about what the 35 does on a full frame, plus it will be two stops faster. I often use a 35 f1.4 and 85 f1.2 on my 1Ds2 at wide apertures, despite the fact it handles noise quite well at high ISOs. Even if the M8 does as well in this area, I suppose I am more likely to get the Summicron. Does the Leica factory close for holiday in August? If so, and if they are making these cameras there, I would assume they are already producing cameras and lenses to sell after Photokina. It sure will be nice to have a smaller competent camera to carry!
marknorton Posted July 31, 2006 Author Share #43 Posted July 31, 2006 Bill, you said you thought it will be 16-18-21 so will be wider than the frame used by the 28mm Summicron. If they did come out with such a lens, I think it would come with it's own finder.. And then there's the issue of how to support the 24mm Elmarit. I don't know if the whole factory closes down in August, it's not like Paris which is a ghost town...
fotografr Posted July 31, 2006 Share #44 Posted July 31, 2006 "And if you caress it a little, that 21mm lens suddenly becomes 280mm !!!!" Ha! Wishful thinking on your part.
billh Posted July 31, 2006 Share #45 Posted July 31, 2006 Bill, you said you thought it will be 16-18-21 so will be wider than the frame used by the 28mm Summicron. Sigh. That is not a good sign. I have no idea how I could possibly have equated 21mm with 28mm (the decline is beginning?). 16,18 and 21mm is indeed correct. So now I need two new lenses? Thanks for bring this mistake to my attention.
