theoldman Posted October 30, 2014 Share #1 Posted October 30, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I might be repeating earlier posts but......... Can I use my new Ebay acquired SF58 flash (a £240 bargain) off camera and retain TTL? Thanks.
Advertisement Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Hi theoldman, Take a look here M240 with SF58. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
DirkR440 Posted October 30, 2014 Share #2 Posted October 30, 2014 It works for example with the Nikon SC-17 cable.
AlanJW Posted October 30, 2014 Share #3 Posted October 30, 2014 Bottom line is yes, it works with a Nikon SC-17. I have used it that way. It also works with the multifunction grip and the SCA extension for it, but that is a very much more expensive solution. If you don't need to use your EVF, the Nikon cord is the way to go (Nikon cords other the SC-17 may also work). If you do need the EVF then you are stuck with the grip and extension -- and the extension will have the flash too low IMHO. I had to construct a riser to hold the extension hotshoe higher. Luke_Miller Posted October 31, 2014 Share #4 Posted October 31, 2014 Here is how I get mine out of the camera hot shoe for better balance. I bounce the flash so the lower position is not an issue regarding shadows.

Everything works perfectly, even TTL-HSS? Many thanks for all responses.
Luke_Miller Posted October 31, 2014 Share #6 Posted October 31, 2014 It definitely loses no advantages by being used off camera? Everything works perfectly, even TTL-HSS? I can't speak to HSS as it is not a feature of my M9. But with the correct sync cord (I prefer a shortened Nikon SC-28) all functionality of the flash being in the camera hot shoe is preserved off camera. The only issue I've experienced is due to the SF-58 contacts being located slightly differently than those of a Nikon flash. The result is the connection between the SC-28 and the SF-58 foot is a bit fragile and any movement of the foot in the cord's hot shoe can break the connection. Unfortunately Leica does not offer a sync cord other than the SCA one for the Multifunctional Grip.

I use a Nikon SC-17 and have never experienced an issue with intermittent connection of the contacts. Could this be due to fact you have shortened your SC-28 and the intermittent contact is in the cord? Rick

Could this be due to fact you have shortened your SC-28 and the intermittent contact is in the cord? Unfortunately no. I've tried a half dozen Nikon cords, both SC-17 and SC-28, with the same result. I know others do not experience this, so I am at a loss to explain it. Perhaps my SF-58 flash foot is out of spec.

FlashGordonPhotography Posted May 11, 2015 Share #12 Posted May 11, 2015 Reading through this I presume the Canon cable is incompatible? Yep. Pins don't line up. Gordon p.s. the above set up is remarkably similar to the Leica MFG/SCA adaptor set up. Only a thousand dollars cheaper (and you couldn't use the EVF.
