sansanaba Posted October 3, 2014 Share #1 Posted October 3, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello everyone, regarding the M Monochrom, I just got it yesterday and charged the battery, accidentally left it on for a few hours and it was dead when I got back to it. Is this normal? I have set the timer to auto turn off after 2min. By a few hours I mean ~8. Thanks!

richfx Posted October 3, 2014 Share #2 Posted October 3, 2014 My MM battery lasts as long as my M9's, maybe longer. Rich

DigitalHeMan Posted October 3, 2014 Share #4 Posted October 3, 2014 I regularly forget to turn my M-E and it doesn't affect the battery life. Is it possible that something was pressing a button (for example it was in a bag) preventing it from going into standby mode? Is it a brand new battery or second hand? Otherwise something doesn't sound right.
esquire53 Posted October 3, 2014 Share #5 Posted October 3, 2014 Hello everyone, regarding the M Monochrom, I just got it yesterday and charged the battery, accidentally left it on for a few hours and it was dead when I got back to it. Is this normal? I have set the timer to auto turn off after 2min. By a few hours I mean ~8. Thanks! Monochrom works fine in auto shutoff. hard to say if it lasts longer than M9. I have both and use them regularly and never had an issue. Now just out of interest, is it a new MM with a new battery? I have an old spare battery from my M8 and that battery just dies after a few shots, even after hours of charging. test the battery, charge it and monitor the battery voltage in the camera every hour or so. good luck
250swb Posted October 3, 2014 Share #6 Posted October 3, 2014 It would be more revealing if you had described the problem after a few attempts so some sort of pattern may emerge. The camera should not drain the battery if left switched on, but was the battery fully charged anyway, we don't know, is it a second hand camera and the battery is just a worn out old one, we don't know, is the battery charger faulty, we don't know...........? If I had to choose a culprit to look at first it would be the charger or battery or both. Steve
thighslapper Posted October 3, 2014 Share #7 Posted October 3, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Full battery performance does not occur until charged and fully discharged a few times. There are plenty of threads here where users have described odd camera and battery behaviour initially that then vanishes with use. Re-check your settings and just re-charge and use the camera normally for a while. If it persists then it is probably a faulty battery.
DigitalHeMan Posted October 3, 2014 Share #8 Posted October 3, 2014 Just a thought..... A number of years ago I had a similar thing happen with a new Nikon camera. At the time Nikon told me that this was normal as the first charge was used to barge up the internal battery used to power the clock etc. Maybe the same case with Leica as well? sanyasi Posted October 3, 2014 Share #10 Posted October 3, 2014 A lot of battery life comes down to screen usage. I found recently that I was able to get through an entire day (12 hours or so) walking around Paris with an M and MM without changing the batteries. I had about 300 shots on the MM. I think I filled a card and half with the M. In short, battery life has not been a problem for me. I don't do video or live view with the M. One suggestion for Leica: Put a lock on the off position. It is to easy to rub up against the camera bag interior and accidentally switch the camera on. Always carry a second battery.
NikonJeff Posted October 3, 2014 Share #11 Posted October 3, 2014 I think a couple posts have given some great insight unless it's a defective battery or something that happened such as a depressed shutter button or something that would drain the battery. 1) I'm almost positive that the initial charge of the internal clock battery pulls off of the main system battery so that could be the issue. 2) I do agree that the battery will not have it's full charge potential until after a few charge cycles… Keep us posted and grab a second battery
sansanaba Posted October 5, 2014 Author Share #12 Posted October 5, 2014 Thanks everyone for the feedback. Looks like it may have been when I put the camera in my bag. It must have pressed the shutter button, depleting the battery life.
leicatiman Posted July 23, 2017 Share #13 Posted July 23, 2017 Is anyone still reading this? I've had the identical problem. The ON switch is too soft, so I've had numerous dead battery surprises. The camera control system should be smart enough to turn off the camera before this can happen
leicatiman Posted July 23, 2017 Share #14 Posted July 23, 2017 I've been hoping fo a firmware update that fixes this. Nothing!
