M Kenya Posted October 5, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted October 5, 2014 Thanks All :-) Was very lucky to have been filming a news item on the affect oil exploration in Virunga National Park DR Congo would have on the endangered mountain gorillas, was able to get a quick shot of this mother and baby. Most difficult issue filming and taking photograph was my viewfinders kept misting up making focusing a tad difficult at times. Had amazing park rangers to help during the 1 hour I had to film. stuny Posted October 6, 2014 Share #10 Posted October 6, 2014 For all who have not yet had the pleasure of seeing mountain gorillas in the wild (and they do not do well in captivity, BTW), once your group finds a family of the gorillas you have only one hour to be with them, and you must stay at least five meters away -- This is for their protection since we share so much DNA that even a cold might be disasterous for them -- If you're not well you will not be permitted to go trekking to find them. After one of our treks, when observing that the gorillas largely ignore us, Barbara quipped that the silverback wispered to the others, "Just ignore them. They'll leave in an hour or so." The DRC is a bit too close to the ebola crisis for us, and there are still patches of civil war hostilities in the DRC. If you want to see these wonderful creatures you might be better off seeing them in Uganda and/or Rwanda. See Barbara's trip notes on our site for details.
