ron110n Posted May 6, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mothers day is almost here. I am thinking of getting "the little ole' lady from Pasadena" or my mom a Leica P&S. Pls. don't suggest any Manual 35mm or Digital. She's 74 yrs old and that's too advanced for her. She currently shoot with an Oly P&S with auto zoom. Perhaps Leica has something comparable. Of course as a retired senior citizen, her taste on film is Lucky. Also her taste in labs is Costco or any one hour Pharmacy processing. Here's mom's typical snaps. Olympus Stylus / Lucky 35mm Film. Thanks in advanced for your suggestions. -Ron
Advertisement Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 Hi ron110n, Take a look here Compact Leica Point & Shoot Recomendation. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wda Posted May 6, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 6, 2007 Ron, Leica don't make the sort of film camera you are seeking. The nearest would be a mint MiniZoom or one of the C series. My wife has the former and also a C3 which zooms from 28-108. A non-zoom variant would be the sleek little Leica Mini but you would have to scour the dealers to find one of those. ron110n Posted May 7, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted May 7, 2007 Thanks David, I find the C3 to be pretty interesting as a present to a senior mom. Looks like a D-lux and very compact! Too bad it is out of production and therefore my only option is a used one. Digital would've been a fine alternative, but the problem is the computer. Thanks for the tip! -Ron
Overgaard Posted May 7, 2007 Share #4 Posted May 7, 2007 I would say the Leica CM fits. It's film, autofocus, compact, has a small flash and it's fast and silent. The 40mm lens is fantastic.
andybarton Posted May 7, 2007 Share #5 Posted May 7, 2007 Another vote for a CM. Not the lightest little camera in the world, but the lens is fantastic. Mine is always with me in my briefcase.
jaapv Posted May 7, 2007 Share #6 Posted May 7, 2007 Nothing wrong with the current range Leica point and shoots. I do not see digital as a disadvantage. There are plenty of happy shooters that don't bother with the computer but simply drop off the SD card at the local photoshop. With the current crop of small digitals the results are more than acceptable. There are even shops that allow the customer in-store basic manipulation with touch-screen systems. ron110n Posted May 7, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted May 7, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) OMG... the CM is for me and not my mom. Since I want my present to be brand new and I found a store that's local and has one new, I guess it will be a CM. At least I can borrow it once in a while. Thanks guys! -Ron
enboe Posted May 7, 2007 Share #8 Posted May 7, 2007 My little old lady from Long Beach, aka my mom, uses one of the Olympus Stylus Epics without the zoom. Many people, myself included, consider it superior to the zoom Stylus models. The extra stop or two on the lens helps a lot, and the camera has proven quite resilient. Just a thought. lmr Posted May 7, 2007 Share #9 Posted May 7, 2007 My vote is a CM or Minilux. Bought my Mom a Minilux a few yeras ago... like 7-8(?) and she loves it. She is now 70+ and she still travels WW with it and had some great pictures. The Minilux is now old looking, big and heavy... so nobody will take a second look @ stealing it. Those punks go for sleek digital cameras.
ron110n Posted May 8, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted May 8, 2007 Jaap, A D-lux 3 would've been perfect and easy to find. But mom turns off my computer through that button with a red light... "ON THE POWER STRIP"!!!! Argh!@##$!!!! Eric, I think you are right. her camera is a rangefinder and not a zoom. I remember I see a frame when she ask me to shoot a pics. Robert, Yes same reason as yours. My mom travels a lot with her sister WW. Maybe for this years trip to Vienna and Budaphest, she'll bring home pics with the leica look. Too bad I can't go this year cause I'm taking Graduate Studies at night after work till spring 2008. Thanks guys for the suggestions! -Ron
Guest Motivfindender Posted May 8, 2007 Share #11 Posted May 8, 2007 Why not an mini 2 or 3? costs nowadays nearly nothing on Ebay altough expensive when buyed new, often nearly not-used (or handled very carefully) by the owner... very, very good optics... and for the resting money, you can afford a dinenr with your ma... (she can shoot that evening too) look for instance here: eBay: Leica Mini mit 3,5/35mm Elmar & Tasche (Artikel 270117300535 endet 14.05.07 22:00:00 MESZ) There are lots of cameras like that, why not buy one of them? They exist with a 35mm optics Or with 35-70mm optics... greetings Dirk
ron110n Posted May 9, 2007 Author Share #12 Posted May 9, 2007 Dirk, That's a good idea. I didn't know that leica made these models. Looks very similar to her existing Oly. Just load the film and shoot. Thanks! -Ron

Just load the film and shoot. Thanks! -Ron As far as I remember, this is also an easy-to-handle, self-loading model with wind-back at image 24 or 36. so --> damn good quality of lenses and so is the photo , fully automatisized ---> ideal for older moms! She will like it! (And ask her, where to go for dinner with her.... greetings Dirk
ron110n Posted May 11, 2007 Author Share #14 Posted May 11, 2007 Hi Dirk, The newest looking I found was a Leica C3 on eBay. I won the auction and with all the savings... I'm taking the whole family to dinner. =) Now I'm taking all her Lucky and Kirkland films for C41 experiments on my Jobo CPP-2 and I will replace it with Provia and Reala. The lab??? There's nothing I can do with that. If she live in UK, she will be a jolly repeat costumer at Tesco. Well... for the US, it's Costco. Thanks! -Ron
ron110n Posted May 13, 2007 Author Share #15 Posted May 13, 2007 I will replace it with Provia and Reala. Provia??? She'll hang me with the roll of Provia. Mom don't know what to do with transparencies. Correction: that's Kodak Portra. Mom got her C3 today. She is very happy and figured the P&S camera faster than I did. Here's what's funny, I never had a P&S since my early 20's. I couldn't figure-out how to load the film. Mom took the camera from me, load the film, shut the film door, and took a snap, "that quick". I asked how did you do that and I think you need to set the ISO. She said, this is a Senior Citizen Certified Camera. "It could think" while your M "can't". Oh well.. at least I can now post her senior snaps at the Photo Forum. Of course, grand kids and her 1st, great grand son on the top photo. Happy Mothers Day to all mommy's! -Ron

David Ron, I can't believe it. My recommendation won you over! Well done; it is a powerful little camera which is often overlooked. I must look back over the thread to see how much it cost. ron110n Posted May 14, 2007 Author Share #17 Posted May 14, 2007 Dave, The auction closed at $212. I did my bid over the cell phone since I was on the field then and a few minutes after a text from ebay came telling me I won the auction. I have no idea how much it cost brand new, but it looks mint and what's most important is mom is happy and that's priceless. Tell your wife I said Happy Mothers Day! -Ron Ron, From memory, the one I bought for my wife about six years ago came in a kit with case, an album, pencil and ....; I think the kit cost £299 when first launched. It was worth it for the quality of the lens and the fact that it has 28mm at the wide end. David
ron110n Posted May 16, 2007 Author Share #19 Posted May 16, 2007 Hi Dave, At today's exchange rate, that's almost $600 USD. The case is included, but I believe the first owner is currently using the album. Also no pencil... Not bad at all! I think it's a good deal. Thanks for the info! -Ron
rnocke Posted May 16, 2007 Share #20 Posted May 16, 2007 Minilux Zoom is it! Easy to operate, reasonable zoom range (35-70), built-in flash with reasonable coverage and (maybe important for the lady) very nice design and quality feel (titanium body). Give it a try!
