box86rowh Posted September 19, 2014 Share #1 Posted September 19, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have recently aqcuired a Leica AHOOT waist-level viewfinder and attached to the viewfinder on the upper shoe was a small level that is unmarked except for this "F.L. 441 S.A." I know the Leica Luftwaffen cameras have FL marking so it made me think it was military and did a little digging and saw that some Leica items are marked SA for the Sturmabteilung, or the Storm Troopers that helped Hitler rise to power. Anyone have a clue what this is and if it is Leica?? Pictures attached... Welcome, dear visitor! luigi bertolotti Posted September 19, 2014 Share #2 Posted September 19, 2014 Interesting find... Leitz did make, in the 30' a spirit level (FIBLA) to be attached to std. shoe... but has a completely different look... your item seems to have a rather rough finishing (though the level is probably well-made, in itself) which doesn't smell of Leitz factory... but can't say anymore, sorry... In your 2nd picture there seems to be an engraving on the black tail......is it or just an undefined scratch ?

luigi bertolotti Posted September 19, 2014 Share #4 Posted September 19, 2014 Looking well... it seems a well made level, maybe part of some other device, to which someone has solded a hotshoe adapter (metal and finishing look very different). I'm not into the military engravings, so have nothing to say about.. F.L. is indeed a well known engraving on military Leicas.

gyoung Posted September 19, 2014 Share #6 Posted September 19, 2014 Are the two screw countersinks used for screws? Looks rather like the sort of levels attached to the standards of monorail cameras (such as the Sinar I used for years, although its NOT the same as on Sinar) Gerry

When did they start making monorail cameras? I can't tell if those are screw holes but its possible.
250swb Posted September 19, 2014 Share #8 Posted September 19, 2014 It looks like 'something' glued to 'something else' and touched up with a bit of badly applied black paint. I'm not saying Leica couldn't have done it. Steve
gyoung Posted September 19, 2014 Share #9 Posted September 19, 2014 I started using Sinar in 1970 and they had been around a good while then. Gerry
