M240 Viewfinder question

According to the manual of the M typ 240 magnification is 0.68x. There is no mention of angle of view but there is information that at 2 meters the bright line frame size corresponds exactly to the sensor size and how it varies at infinity depending on the focal length of the lens.

The widest frame lines are for 28mm which is roughly 75 degrees diagonal. (Those who don't wear glasses and are right-eyed and don't have deep-set eye sockets can mash their eye to the finder and so I'm told, use the entirety for a 24mm lens.)

I could do this on the M9. 24mm at a pinch.

On the 240 I feel it's a bit different (and it's probably my vivid imagination) but I feel that the frames look larger on the M240. Could it be the different frame distances (1m for the M9 vs 2m for the 240) has made the frames a bit larger in the viewfinder on the M240?

Hello Gordon,

If by "larger" you mean that the frames showing the angle of coverage at 2 meters cover a wider angle of view than the frames representing the angle of view at 1 meter then you are accurate in your perception.

The focal length inscribed on a lens is the distance from the Second Nodal Point of that lens to the film/sensor of the camera when that lens is focussed at Infinity.

As a lens is focussed closer than Infinity: The distance from the Second Nodal Point to the film/sensor increases. This makes the lens's actual focal length longer at the closer distance. The longer a lens is: The narrower its angle of coverage.

A lens focussed at 1 meter has an actual focal length that is longer than the same lens focussed at 2 meters. Therefore the angle of coverage at the closer distance is smaller.

This means that the frames projected to show the angle of coverage at 1 meter look smaller than the frames showing the angle of coverage at 2 meters when the viewfinder magnification & angle af coverage of the basic viewfinder are the same.

Best Regards,

Michael

Good point, and I believe you are quite correct. Being a glasses-wearer I could barely use the 28mm frames on any M, so 24mm was never an option for me.
