Why would anyone want a Leica with no screen?

The weakest link for us left-eyed M8 hacks is the back screen.

Nose prints to continually clean.

Screen covers to scratch, requiring the sapphire screen cover variants.

"Coffee stains" between the cover and the LCD.

LCD's that go dead without spare parts available.

In the list of camera parts, the LCD is the weakest link, although the CCD or CMOS chip has a limited vendor base, as do the special purpose processing chips. LED's and mechanical parts are much more producible. This is why the film M situation is so much more diverse for repair options.

I remember putting together a post long ago on how you could use the top LCD on the M8 to control, most major functions. Two 7-segment digits and to buttons, forward and select, was all you needed for all essential M8 sub-menus. Simplify or drop options, and the screen and buttons can disappear altogether, although I would like some type of frame counter. Perhaps the viewfinder LEDs.

Do I advocate for dropping screens altogether - absolutely not. They are useful for reasons included elsewhere in the thread, just not absolutely essential - just ask any film shooter.

Your experience and shooting style may vary.

Eric

I love this M60. It is really beautiful. Lovely.

Why a "limited edition"?

Please, make it normal edition at normal prices !!!!

Photographers can't pay 15,000 euros. Collectors is a different thing.

I will offer Leica a replacement: my M(240) and a few bucks in exchange for a new M60 :D

My opinion on this camera is... yes! It is a brave concept and a wonderful design. Only Leica does this.

I would love having one.

From an aesthetic point of view it looks a little too much like the titanium M9 for my taste but I like the idea of it. As far as price goes, it does also include a 35 Summilux so it's 'only' priced at a 35% or so premium over normal RRP for an M-P and 35 Summilux.:D

BRAVO Leica! This is everything I love about Leica. This is gutsy and ground breaking and the sort of bold action that the world could do with more of.

They NEED to make it a standard edition. This is the way photography should be, IMO. It is perfect in every way, drop dead gorgeous and I want it.

I'm awaiting specifics but I have to say, at this point I am very tempted by it.

I can't help but feel they should have incorporated a kelvin wheel for white balance into the back of it though….

I'm surprised that it's £3,500 more than the standard edition with 35 Summilux. I'm not even going to pretend I'm not just plain mad, but I think that is reasonable in Leica terms and I'm genuinely surprised, all things considered, given it's a scarcity, limited nature and a landmark camera.

It would send my OCD compulsions mad and bug me to hell that I don't have a complete matching set of lenses though.

Great, I assume the internal light meter still works as before ?

The functionality of this is pretty much all I use, other than a quick sneak at the 1s show of the histogram if I'm being lazy with careful consideration of the light meter. Please remove the 'A' as well ;)

I guess the colour temp is only relevant for JPG's ?

Now Leica, humour me, put it in a MP (Not M240P) case and offer the CCD sensor as an option

Not necessary: the camera is RAW only so you can set white balance when "developing".

Kudos to Leica: they seem to have omitted the frame countdown and battery indicator as well as the monitor and strap lugs.

Remove the screen, fine, there were a number of fans lusting for that. But they had absolutely no mandate to remove the screw which has been an iconic expression of Leica magic ever since the introduction of the M - P.

It's very distraughtening.

Yes, I'm not sure Leica have thought this through properly unless they think the M60 will never be actually used. Is there any indication how you might format a card?

Of course they have - very carefully. You carry a MacBook Pro in your satchel or backpack, but it means you have a nice sleek minimalist digital camera ;)

I only ever format after I download a card to a computer so that is not a big issue for me especially with a 32 or 64GB card.

I don't use a strap anyway and I'm sure there is some sort of battery indicator.

I would need it to work with the multifunction grip for a tethered connection at times though, but the more I think about it the more I like it as an additional body.

It's a pity, that the new M edition 60 is just produced in a small batch. A day ago we were discussing what a camera without a screen would look like. Now it appears, that Leica has listened to us.

Can we really do without the screen? As an MP user, it would not be so difficult, but what about the digital camera user. Can he make the turn around? These a exiting times!

Maybe time for a Monochrom without screen?

Gutsy? They took an off the shelf M, removed parts, gave Audi a little free advertising to create the shell, then with a straight face, added a few thousand dollars to the price, called it a special edition and issued a press release.

Virtually no risk for Leica on this one.

I don't have an issue with it, good for them. But what I would have liked to see if they were going to do this is to make it $1,000-$2,000 less than the M. It would at least make me think about getting one instead of just ignoring or shutting off my LCD.
