As far as I know there is no global price increase; this only concerns the price in the US.

Odd, since the US dollar has lately been increasing in value compared with the Euro. Though the dollar is still weaker than it was in September 2012.

Hmmm. My first reaction was the MP will reduce the price somewhat on used Ms, so a small increase will help support used prices to avoid irritating existing M owners.

Of course a price increase also sets the stage for a higher price for next year's M replacement while bringing in a little more funds meanwhile to Leica and it's dealers.

True?

Leica is better than Fuji in one regard - Leica does not slash its MSRP to the point where it undercuts the secondary (used) market. That's because Leica, like Apple, understands that luxury brands almost never cut prices. They might rebate, bundle, or offload products to other markets as B stock. But in the end, there is no apparent oversupply or over pricing.

The last is not a given. Remember how pleasantly surprised everybody was the introduction of the 240?

Of course. My point was supposition to be sure.

As for M price, companies set prices to garner a target profit. The formula takes into account fixed costs (development for example), and variable costs (to produce each unit). The more units sold the less the development cost is per unit. If less than target units are sold, company makes less or loses money. If more are sold they have an embarrassment of riches which probably happened with M9 and helped get investor funds.

My guess is Leica sold many more M9s than expected and with perfect (hindsight) knowledge, would have priced it lower. So when it came to setting price for new M they probably assumed a larger sales volume hence a lower than expected price.

If all this is true, the question is how many Ms have been sold and how many will be sold for its replacement? M9 was first full frame which likely attracted more buyers. A third generation full frame model may interest less people. Of course if Leica's image grows, new buyers may move to Leica and if expected the price of the replacement M may not change much or may go up a few hundred.

My local Leica Dealer has sent out an upgrade price list for trading in your old camera for a new M-P. To upgrade an M240 in good condition for the M-P it will only cost £2000, to take exactly the same photographs that you could when walking into the shop as those you can take when walking out. That is how much a screw costs in Leica land.

Duh.

What other camera manufacturer gives you double the buffer capacity, scratch resistant display and frame selection lever for free?

So people can keep their finger on the button to make even more boring street shots of people walking about, for guarding against their diamonds rubbing against the screen, and for the people who don't know what coverage different lenses give?.........Doh! it's obvious when you say it like that.:D

Well, if that's what you're looking for.

You should not wear any shirts with diamond buttons, though, as they are bound to scratch the display quite badly. You see, diamonds are more forev than the display, or "forever", as they say. :o
