ironringer Posted August 20, 2014 Share #1 Posted August 20, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Could owners-readers of the 1950s-60s Leica Fotographie magazine please inform us: - is the Europe Fotographie the same as the US Photography magazine (same contents, just a different title)? - what is the history of this magazine, prewar and postwar? - when did the postwar issues start, in English? - are the 1950s-60s issues good sources of equipment reviews, technical articles, Leica history, etc.? I do not have any of these old magazines and am interested to learn about their contents, as reported by owners.
Advertisement Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Hi ironringer, Take a look here Fotographie magazine US and Europe editions?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted August 20, 2014 Share #2 Posted August 20, 2014 Leica Fotografie International is a German magazine that appears in a German and English translated version. I am not aware of any specific USA clone. The contents have always been a mix of articles about Leica gear and related technical subjects and photographers using Leica equipment. I am not aware of any USA connection. Collections of older issues do sometimes come up for sale. Maybe MJH can enlighten you further, as he is a regular contributor. luigi bertolotti Posted August 20, 2014 Share #3 Posted August 20, 2014 I have never been a regular reader of it... but by chance, found a set of the years 1960-62 at a flea market in Milano (6 magazines, German edition) and (though not mastering at all Deutsch... ) bought them for 5 Euros, 3 years ago : a good mix of the arguments you quote, with fine images (considering mean printing quality of the era) and technical advices that looks pleasantly "old time" : filters usage, film types... even an intersting review on photo papers with what seems to me (largely unable to read...) a deep analisys on what really means to deal with CONTRAST at the various stages of BW film workflow. About "Leica historica" I frankly didn't found anything that was new to me. Anyway, a pleasant found... I bought also some other sparse German Photo magazines of the era, in which the most fascinating content was the advertisings... ... is incredible how many meters were offered in those times... many of them from disappeared brands... and also how many "3rd party" lenses did exist well before that Tamron Tokina Vivitar etc caught the market, killing a share of the German industry... is like to read the English magazine "Motorcycle" of the same years... TomB_tx Posted August 20, 2014 Share #4 Posted August 20, 2014 I began reading Leica Fotographie in the mid 1960s before buying my first Leica, and then subscribed through the 70s. An (even) older friend recently gave me his old issues (along with 4-5 older Leicas) dating into the 50s. They had a good mix of tech articles and focus on photographers' work, and intros of new equipment. Leitz USA also published "Leica Photography" - a larger format with fewer pages that was similar, but more about the US market. These came free when you bought a Leica in the US. I still find them interesting, although the advertising and tech reviews can be a bit depressing as you see how useful products have disappeared. I still remember one article in the US magazine about a sky diver who dropped his M3 from a few thousand feet up; then found it and wiped the mud off and found it still worked. k_g_wolf ✝ Posted August 24, 2014 Share #6 Posted August 24, 2014 You are very lucky LEICA person. It took me 20 odd years to gather all of them, well, almost all, back to 1949. LUIGI & TOM described nicely, what you can expect from them. Best GEORG

ironringer Posted August 26, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted August 26, 2014 Thank you magazine readers for the initial information. Many of the old covers show interesting pictures, even if not always lovely ladies ... I have more questions: 1. Were some contents/articles of the Euro-Fotographie and US-Photography the same, for a given date-issue? 2. Were Euro-Fotographie magazines multi-language, including English? 3. Was there a prewar Fotographie (or similar) magazine? 4. How many Euro-Fotographie magazines were issued from the postwar through about 1990 (basically the screwmount and M eras)? I am interested in acquiring some older issues (1940s-50s) if any North American readers have spares.
