alan.y Posted August 20, 2014 Share #1 Â Posted August 20, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I bought a pre-FLE Asph whose serial number is 39365**. Â According to the wiki page, the 2002 production ranged from 3936764 to 3937763, excluding mine. Â What does this mean? And what does whatever it means mean anyway? Â Did the original owner perhaps lose the front ring and have it replaced in 2002? Â Danke sehr.
Advertisement Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Hi alan.y, Take a look here Summilux-M 35 pre-FLE serial number not in Wiki. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
250swb Posted August 20, 2014 Share #2 Â Posted August 20, 2014 I don't think you should take 2002 to mean they assigned a new batch of serial numbers on 1st January. Â The numbers are random in any case, they don't come out of the factory and go to dealers in a strict order, so it is reasonable to assume by your earlier number they were still using up the previous batch of numbers before the new batch was produced. alan.y Posted August 20, 2014 Author Share #3 Â Posted August 20, 2014 The thing is the previous (2000) production run of the black Lux (again according to the Wiki) ranged between 3905626 and 3906625. Mine falls in the gap in the middle.
luigi bertolotti Posted August 21, 2014 Share #4 Â Posted August 21, 2014 It has always happened that some lenses have numbers outside of the published batches... (You can even find some cases published in the Wiki) So, don't worry, and, if you wish to be reassured, write to Leica... It's a not so old lens and they probably can confirm you that your number belongs to a Summilux 35 asph.

luigi bertolotti Posted August 22, 2014 Share #6 Â Posted August 22, 2014 A possible easy explanation : in 2002 they planned two adiacent rather large batches (1000 items) of Elmar M 50 (3935764 to 3936763) and Summilux 35 (3936764 to 3937763) : just a planning... then they did monitor the real flow of demand/orders from the sales channel...and (as not seldom happens in the Leica world... ) resulted that "customers like the luxury more than the normal" (and... who is the Leica passionate that has not "at least one lens named Elmar" ? ) ; so, in due course of short-term manufacturing planning, they shifted part of the planned batch from Elmar to Summilux... including your one.
